Well, I happen to have an Aviator 5.4L sitting in the bed of my truck right know. The "cam" covers ( I assume you mean the things previously called valve covers?) are aluminum. I don't know if the 4.6L is the same.

BTW, that 5.4L has a bad timing chain, from what I was told. It's pretty much complete. Need any parts? Heads, ignition coils,CAM COVERS, etc...?

The stocker 4.6 Explorer cam covers are ABS plastic and they are a Romeo head bolt pattern because the heads in our X's are Romeo 2v heads. So if you ever plan on doing some nice shiny aftermarket covers then get the ones for the Romeo heads.

11-bolt, PI heads on the Wife's Monty... ABS like the intake... No powder coating afterall... bummer.

thanks all for the replies

There are some low heat powder coats out there that people have gotten to work on ABS. I don't have any personal experience with these but you might want to give it a try. Or you can do what I did with my stock Explorer 4.6 cam covers and just prep and paint them real well. Turned out pretty good.

BTW, The PI 4.6 2v heads came in both Romeo and Windsor depending on the vehicle they were in and year model. Another way to tell was how the cam sprockets attached to the camshafts.

thanks Rocket.

engine looks beastly. Seeing stuff like that makes me hate the Drive-by-wire (D-B-W) of the '04-up 4.6Ls... I wish I had the time/$$ to have a D-B-W to get a throttle body machined that would accept the D-B-W solenoid & such. The D-B-W has held up most all of the engine mods I have wanted to do on the Wife's Monty.

I would have a Kenne Bell on there already if it weren't D-B-W.

I think I found a killer deal on a set of Cast Aluminum Trick Flow Cam Covers, so if that falls through, I will go the painted route.

I am sure there are work around for your DBW setup. After all, it is just a throttlebody. Look into the stuff available for the 2005-2009 Mustang GT's. I know they have KB kits made for them and they were DBW. Chances are likely that you could use their DBW Accufab TB on a 2v KB kit. Even worst case scenario you have someone machine an adapter that allows the use of your TB on the KB intake. Remember that the 1.7L and 2.1L KB's have a very different upper intake manifold that may lend better to the use of your TB. Those kits will only max out at about 500rwhp tops but that is usually decent enough for most Explorer owners because most don't plan to push past the 425-450rwhp limit of the stock shortblock anyways.
