Save a few more bucks up and go for the Magnaflow catback. That should really make the difference, and then remove the third cat if you still want more.

i talked to this guy with a 2000 explorer sport 4.0 that had 1.25 piping (no mufflers) from where the third cat wouldve been, back to the rear. sounded like a mean v8, even at high rpms. i was shocked that having no mufflers could sound that good. he said it was because the piping was small?

I dont have a 3rd cat. Never did.

Kazer, I think the size of the pipe matters on the sound. I had no muffler on my ex for a day and sounded nowhere near a V8. I actually think reducing to a 2.25 creates a deeper sound. 2.5" sounds better than the 2.5" pipe with a 3" tip on there. Seems like the bigger the pipe on a 6 the ricier it gets.

straight pipes, 2.25 inches with 3 inch tips. ran straight from the cats. but if you do that, i wouldnt take out the cats, you will lose low end power. no, i have the straight pipes, and let me tell you, they are not quiet, and it sounds better than some v8 systems. heres a link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uz-UMMbVDOg

Jamm, that does sound nice. You have duals with no mufflers? Is there enough room to run duals from the third cat? Or do we have to y pipe near the spare tire?

Alright fellas and ladies, let's get serious with this thread. Next wednesday I am swapping mufflers. I'm headed over to the 4.0 sound thread but the more suggestions you post the better for me.

-I want a nice deep sound, I know I have no V8 but still.

not sure how itll work forr you, but i threw on 2.5 inch straight pipes (cat back) with no mufflers, and it rocks. my v6 4.0 is louder than my neighbors 1500 chevy with dual flowmasters. if you can stand a little cabin noise with the windows up, and ALOT with them down, go that way, otherwise, anything you put on is going to deaden the sound. hope this helps, and i have a vid of mine btw

I think I was just watching your video. Sounds nice but I'm not looking for too loud, I want a nice rumble but not too annoying.

lol totally didnt realize i already replied in this thread -_-

I have flow master muffler on my 96 explorer 4.0 and it sounds great.if I was you wouldn't take the cat off.here in nc doing so it's jail time FYI. You can try K&N air intake kit also.that's gonna give ya some more hp with the big tires (33's) that's what I have.good luck!

Muffler is the one that gives that sound!

just got back from the muffler shop. flowmaster original 40 series. i hope it will pop less after some carbon builds up... still debating on removing the third cat or not.

Check youtube, I was eying up the 50 series for my SOHC, but never got around to it.

I honestly do not care for any of the mufflers on the 4.0, at least with the explorer. I know someone with a catback magnaflow and its by far the best v6 exhaust Ive heard, but the piping is different than that of an explorer, hence the sound is different.

which one of the flowmaster 40 series you used?
entrance and exit (left, right middle)?
do you have to use an extension pipe between?

thanks, tom

Its the flowmaster original 40 series. Part .number 42441. You'll need about a 12 inch piece of pipe after the muffler to connect back to the stock piping

I'm kind of changing my mind about a FM40 and going for a FM50. It sounds really nice, and not too loud.

Here's a clip of one. Credit for this goes to MillerTimeX17
