first off - this forum is amazing.
I picked up a 99 XLT and ive been fixin it up to be my Wife's kid hauler for the last couple weeks.
I am really stuck on my rear brake job - i have never had a harder time with a parking brake job than this one.

I had to grind apart the actuater levers after i realized it was supposed to be two pieces, and now i cannot figure out how the hack it is supposed to go back together.

can you tell from these two photos if this is the way the pieces go back in? This is on the driver's side. ive been at it for 2 days now and would really like to go pass inspection soon...

It has been a year and a half since I had mine apart, and they to were rusted together. Sad part is, I cannot remember just how they go back together. But if I remember correctly, the hooked part fits through the slot in the backing plate, then when you set the brake, it pivots in the backing plate, expanding the shoes. It looks to me like you have the smaller piece in the wrong position. I very well could be wrong about this. I will go get my Haynes manual, and see if there is a picture.

yeah i know i have the hook part is pointed in the right direction, towards the rear of the vehicle, the damn biggest problem is that my Haynes book shows an entirely different assembly for their parking brake job.

Ok mine too. I'm sorry I cant be more help. But if it is any consolation, I kept messing with mine and got them to work. Have you removed the other side yet?

yeah ive got them both apart, i have put them back together once already with all new parts and cables - everything was shot, but i'm sure i did the adjuster pieces wrong the first time because they kept falling apart and i couldnt pull enough slack in the rear lines to connect them to the intermediate line, which leads me to believe that i connected the pieces in my photos wrong the first time...anyone else?

Have you tried turning the piece that stays inside the backing plate 180°? Looks like maybe it is facing the wrong direction. Just a guess here.

Here are two pics I found on gavin's thread:

Like dewey said, flip the inner piece towards the front, and put underneath not on top.

Hi Wheel Jack, I just did mine today. I understand your frustration! I believe your picture is correct. The piece that connects to the cable faces towards the rear of course, and both sides are the same. Mine are stamped R and L. It's the inside piece that is difficult. On my drivers side, when I opened it up, it was like drdoom's pictures show; with the inside piece on the bottom, held up by the little shelf. But when I grinded it clean, it was stamped R. And when I opened the passenger side, sure enough, the inside piece was marked L. So, I thought it was reversed from side to side. I searched and found pictures showing like yours, with the inside piece on top. Switching and putting the inside piece on top made my letters make sense. Gravity keeps them together. Plus, that pin on inside piece (in drdooms' picture) interacts with the two indents on the cable piece(in drdooms' picture) when installed on top. So I reassembled mine like your picture shows, with the inside piece on top, L on drivers side, R on the passenger side. It works. Good Luck. gary ds

cool that looks like it should do the trick, Thanx!

Giant pain in the ass. Getting the rear return spring on with the axle installed will be entertaining at the very least.
