How to: 3rd row seating in a 1st & 2nd gen Explorer

Prefix for threads which are instructional.
A little more pricey then something from a boneyard, but this would work really well, especially with the flat floor adapter.

Seats available in Oz (made here too), well were when Explorers were sold/imported here.

nice seat I just picked up another seat (aftermarket) lady paid over 300 bux for it I got it for 100bux... it's removable also

Interesting to see this thread as I was considering doing this too... but my idea was to put the seats back to back with 2nd row to give max leg room. Is there enough headroom for an adult to be comfortable, or is it mostly for kids?

there is a company who already has a kit for this..
they offer a seat, bracket, seatbelts, and instructions

i have one of the third row seats in my 93 explorer. it is a rear facing seat with two integrated seatbelts. it is also removable by taking out two bolts that run across the mounting bracket.

Interesting topic. I had wanted a vehicle with 3rd row seating also, but the wife didn't like the Durango and wouldn't drive the Expedition ( too big ). This might just be the answer I'm looking for. Since it tilts forward, there would still be enough available space for grocery shopping. I do wonder about head room, but still very cool that it's an possible option...and the JC whitney price is actually quite decent considering what you'd pay for one out of our local boneyards that might carry something one could use.

that is the seat i have in the back of my explorer.

How do you like the seat? Good headroom? fold up for enough space for grocery shopping/have adequate space for normal shopping when its down? Is it easy enough to remove completely if necessary? I'd love to hear a review on that seat...might be the determining factor whether I bust part of a paycheck on it or not.

i like having the seat. Mine does not fold up or i haven't figured out how to do it yet. Even with the seat in the truck grocery shopping is no problem as grocery shopping is for 6 people in my house. My 13yo daughter sits back there with no problems. i will get a picture of it installed so you can see the room available.

lilgrumpy,

The seat you have is the one from JC whitney? Looking at it from pictures on teh website, I don't see why it couldn't be turned around to face forward, if it were just mounted as far back as possible. Is that the case or does it absolutely have to go rear facing?

Pics of your setup would be awesome. thanks.

3rd row seat belt

Does anybody know of a rear seat that would have come stock in a vehicle with intergrated shoulder belts. I really like the third row idea but need to make sure my daughter has a shoulder and lap belt. I won't use it very often so i dont want to spend big money on one thanks a lot for any input.

Simple third row seats, like from an Expedition or a Jeep TJ Wrangler, have their shoulder and lap belts simply mounted on the inside of the vehicle and again on the floorboard. Maybe you could make them work?

I've had this in mine for over 10 years now. Definitely got extended life out of my Explorer as my family grew. Great product. Took me 3.5 hours to install taking my time. Definitely recommend it if anyone is looking to add a 3rd row to a 1st Gen. It can be mounted forward or rear facing.

does anyone have the contact info for this company that is mentioned

The GEO Tracker also has that very same type of seat! I pulled it and its seat-belts and have been working on the same idea with the same seat. I am setting up a slightly different mounting since my seat will be rear facing. But it all fits in the back perfectly.

I know that the Geo Tracker & Suzuki Sidekick are twins, but the GEO name was dropped around 1998,but continued as a tracker under Chevrolet badge. Do you recall what year your rear seat came out of & was it a 2 dr or four door version?

It was a two door, don't know the year though. You won't mistake it when you see it though.

Sorry for bumping an old thread but last month I took about 3 days and 12 hours of fabricating a 3rd row for my 2000 Mountaineer. Im thinking about making a build thread for it soon too as well.
