2005 Explorer Eddie Baur
good afternoon

So my 2005 Eddie Bauer explorer has been in turmoil for the past month. Thanks to good weather herein DC I’ve finally been able to look at it . So it started with it not going into gear and then, one dark and stormy night(it actually was raining) I get to a stop light and it cuts out. I start it,put it into drive, cuts out. This happens five times before i say forget it and push it down the hill. That was the last time i looked at it. Today, after reading the forums, i tried cleaning the throttle body (I’m not a mechanic but I can do simple to intermediate repairs) put everything back together tried again and nope. I get out the car and there’s a river of oil or transmission fluid (this is why I’m posting to figure out which) flowing from my car down the street. I’ve attached pics to this post to hopefully figure out how screwed I am. The car cost me $1300 so anything major is a no go so please, give the news docs...is she dead?

I know that’s the oil pan in the fron with the indentation with the screw but the leak is coming from between the back of the oil pan and...told you I wasn’t a mechanic dare I guess transfer case whilst looking like a fool

Also the cel is on with code p0401 (egr) and no warnings about oil pressure or the likes. Sorry for leaving that off

Looks like the front pump seal to the transmission woreout/leaking. This seal seals the torque converter snout to the front pump cover. Changing this seal requires either removing the transmission, or the engine. I am not saying this is you problem, but judging from the pictures, I cant see anything else, and that is the only way for that much fluid to come from that area from between the engine and transmission.

Blacksport,

Thank you so much for your reply. In the case this is the case is it worth fixing or is she scrap.

Rear main seal imo

Donald: thank you so much for your reply. Million Dollar question: would this cause the engine cutouts when putting it into gear?

No not if it's the oil pan

But the stuttering when put in gear sounds like a torque converter or something related like a solenoid or valve body gasket but I'm not much on transmissions

OP states ‘a river of oil or transmission fluid flowing down the street’.

Have you checked the oil level? Is it low?

Mine has a combination of engine oil and transmission fluid down there. LOL!~

Meh. Not by the standards of what i saw running out. The explorer takes about 5 quarts correct? I'm going to verify today as well. I could have missed something in my OMG moment of freaking out.

What engine is it? I know the v8 takes 6 quarts.

That is the oil pan off a 4.0. the V8 has more of a sump to it.

^ Ok, thanks, did not know that.
