Wife's driver side (LH) 9005 bulb burnt out. She called the Ford dealer. She was quoted $88 dollars. WOW!!!
They told her some "pollution" equipment had to be removed to gain access to the bulb.
I went to Autozone, paid $13.99 for a Sylvania 9005 replacement bulb and had it replaced in 15 minutes.
Didn't even have to remove the airbox. Used long needle nose pliers to hold the connector while pushing the bulb with my other hand. This is why automotive dealers have such a poor reputation.

Yes you are exactly right. The mechanics work on flat rate and the only way they can make money is to do jobs in less than book time and to upsell services other than what the vehicle comes in for.

Who goes to a dealer service department for a bulb replacement?

Actually, nevermind.

I used to be ASE certified and worked at a Chevy Dealer also was a mechanic for the local power company. I wouldn't go to dealer for a headlight either but with these cars today and a lot of people have no mechanical experience so I would say it's not that uncommon.
When I was a teenager in the 1970's working at a gas station we would change them for customers, but those days are gone.
On My Camaro to change the parking light the dealer had to pull the bumper. Stupid I know. I know someone with a CTS Cadillac and they had to drop front subframe with trans an engine to replace the thermostat! It's just ridiculas.

Nothing personal, but a post like yours is just another excuse for many people.

Mechanically inexperienced folks have no excuse in the world we live in today. The world is literally at everyone's fingertips through Google. There is also no shame in shopping around. Identify and visit some reputable local Indy shops to inquire what they charge for maintenance type stuff that one may not want to do themselves. If one doesn't have access to Google, there is still good old fashioned person to person dialogue. Ask a friend, neighbor, or even a stranger if you have to.

I had a coworker who's boyfriend didn't know his head from ass regarding the mechanics on cars. I had helped her a little bit and ended up telling her to google or youtube it if she needed to do something that wasn't all that in depth. She ended up changing the alternator herself because of the internet. After that I had loaned my tools to her several times. So, I'm with KayGee on this.
