    This sounds a little like the infamous intake manifold vacuum leak problem. I remember something about it showing up on that sparkplug. Try searching the board for it.

    Check Engine Light

    You don't need to start the engine to get the codes that caused the check engine light to go on. They are stored and read by turning on the ignition. The engine on test is mainly if you aren't getting codes, and are testing other things.

    I had this similar problem, so i went ahead and got a scanner and it turned out to be the O2 sensors. Replaced both the upstream sensors (at $50 each) and it runs great.

    I've seen lots of stuff about leaking intake manifold, have you read through all those topics (I might have seen them on the ford board: www.ford-trucks.com)

    Have you changed your oxygen (O2) sensors lately? This fixed the problem with my '96, but I was also getting a check engine light. If the O2 sensors are old, then the system cycles between rich and lean too much. :frustrate :exp:
