    Transmission won't shift

My 95 has 73K on it and I've recently had a problem since it has gotten cold. My tranny won't execute it's third shift and if I keep accelerating the OD/Off light will start blinking and the code says "Incorrect gear ratio-third gear". However, after the engine warms up it shifts/functions...

    rough idle

Try Fuel Pressure Regulator Yes, definitely check out your fuel pressure by either hooking up a pressure gauge or just by replacing the regulator. They do fail and when they do the pressure gets too high and will cause your idle to vary and run rough. Good Luck!

    33's are on!

AWESOME!! Rod, Your Explorer looks great! I'm glad you got such good help as I don't think I could have done such a good job. I'd be really interested in seeing your truck sometime. Now all you need is some lower gears, lockers....and a state with public land to off-road on. Oh well...

    Texans Please Help

Lift Help Rod, I live in Oak Hill and would be interested in seeing how your lift goes together. I have air tools and a bunch of other garage toys to offer. However, I'm currently putting headers and an oversized exhaust on my VW and can't help you now. In addition, I'm going on...

    95XLT Tranny Code 647

About 6 months ago my "O/D OFF" light started flashing and my 95 XLT started shifting kind of hard. Since I was on vacation with no code reader, I reset the computer and the car started acting normal with no problems till today. Today, while I was driving the same thing happened, but I drove it...

    ATF Filter Screw-up

I just dropped my AT pan to replace the filter and made a pretty big booboo. I didn't notice that the filter on my 95 had 2 o-rings that go on it and put it back together without them. The result is that the tranny would take ~5 seconds before it would engage. Needless to say, I discovered...

2 to 1 downshift clunk in drivetrain

Mike, If your tranny is still under warranty from the shop who rebuilt it, I would take it in to them and have them look at it. It definitely sounds like a tranny problem to me. Check your fluid and see if it smells burnt or is brownish. Where is Puyallup? I grew up in Pullman many many...

Rebuilt 5-speed manual tranny for $350?

$350 isn't an abnormal price for a rebuilt standard. Remember that you'll have to pay shipping to get it and ship your old one to them. My local tranny guru usually charges me $275-$400 for a rebuild and I've never seen one of his rebuilds fail. This usually includes some bearings, sychros...

    Fuel pump running problem reoccurring

Weird! You may try removing the relay after it sticks and then meter the socket to see if there is some voltage. If there is, then maybe you can trace back the problem to the relay driver. This could be a failure in the computer/electronics. Sorry I can't help more. Good luck. Drew

Where to start, It just Quit

JerBear, Sorry to hear your tranny has gone south on you. I ran across this website with cheap($575) A4LD rebuilt tranny's on it and thought I'd let you know about it. I haven't bought anything from them and haven't heard if anyone else has so you'd be taking a risk by trying them. Anyway...

    Tranny overhaul after 15,000 miles?

Roy, Ouch, you're scaring me. I have a 95 XLT and my torque converter was replaced at 36K by the previous owner. About 4K miles ago my O/D Off light starting blinking so I just reset the computer and it's worked fine since. Anyway, to answer your question(s). 1) you have the 4R44E(2WD) or...

    93 A/C question

Chris, Welcome to the world of AC repair. AC repair here in Texas is one of the biggest rackets in the country. Why? All the licensing makes it hard for shade tree mechanics. Anyway, at the bare minimum you should replace your seals. You will need some special tools for this. The tools...

    tranny prob

Check your clutch master and slave cylinders. Sounds like it's either out of fluid or one of the cylinders died or it has air in it. Good luck.

    O2 sensor

Guys, Instead of guessing at problems you should invest in an engine analyzer. Check out http://www.autotap.com They definitely have the most sophisticated and, in my opinion, best idea out there. It will save you from guessing all the time, plus you might find it so neat that you mount a...

    95+ Front Diff seal

Sounds like your front pinon seal. I've never done it on an explorer, but I've done it on other vehicles. Remove your driveshaft and the pinon nut. A gear puller is pretty much essential to remove the seal. Be sure to grease the new seal before you put it in. You'll probably also want to...

    Transmission Needs First Aid

Guys, I was surfing the web and found a tranny shop in AZ that has some of the best prices on rebuilt trannies I've seen. I've never used them but was wondering if anybody else has had any experience with them? Check them out at http://www.phoenixhardparts.com/rebuilt.html I have a local...

    OBD-II?

Dan, Since I went to school in Manhattan I'm sure I'm allowed to you this, but here goes. You shouldn't have OBD-II. The connector under your steering column has pins that are used for the airbags, which were new in 95. Your connector is on the DRIVERS side right behind the battery and in...

    Cycling Temperature

Guys, Mine was cycling exactly as you have described and I too tried replacing my radiator cap with no improvment. However, I checked my overflow reservoir after the car had cooled overnight and it was nearly empty. I filled it up the "COLD FILL" line and drove it with no improvment. However...

    Failed Emmisions

Having personally failed the emissions test in NM numerous times, I have a few suggestions for you to try. Did you only fail CO or did you also fail hydrocarbons? Sometimes if you are running too rich you will fail both...or your hydros should be high at least. Anyway, try changing your oil...

    O/D Off light flashing

Rob, Yes, resetting the computer did make the problem go away. I've driven it several thousand miles with no problems since. I was at 8000 feet elevation when it went off and was figuring the tranny was just being finicky, but I've truthfully been saving some $$ for the feared tranny rebuild...

    Do It Yoursef Gear Swap???

Mac, Gears are tricky cause you have to "Blue Print" them. That is, they put this blue die on the ring and pinon gears to ensure they line up correctly and use shims to line them up. You'd be better off to just remove the the third member yourself and bring it to a shop and pay them to do...

    Mazda Trans @%&#@

I'm not Ford Explorer expert, but I have had a lot of experience with Toyota hydraulic clutches and know that BOTH the master and slave cylinders will fail. Have any of you replaced your clutch master cylinders? It should be a lot less work and $ to replace this than having the tranny rebuilt...

    Padre Island Run?

GJarrett, Well, you used to be able to off-road on Ft. Hood but they closed it down about 2-3 months ago for an environmental impact study. They might open back up to motor vehicles, but you'll want to call them to make sure. The numbers are: Ft. Hood AACC 817-287-8398 or 8203 whichever you...

    Padre Island Run?

Shaggy, Where do you start from? Port Aransas? I live in Austin and would be interested in going, but I might be tied up over the holidays. I might have to drag my boat down and do a little bay fishing as well. No problem for a stocker? I was fishing on Baffin Bay in October and heard some...

Jerking when 4x4 is engaged on '97 Expl.

Wingnut, Are you driving with 4WD on dry pavement? If you don't have control-trac or are in low range and are making u-turns on pavement then you are causing your system to bind. Unlike cars with AWD, you don't have a differential between the front and rear wheels to handle the different...

4WD Auto slipping into 4WD Low - OUCH!!!!!!!!!!

Orange...or Mr. Whip, Did you rpm's jump way way up too? Sounds like something went wrong with your electronics or your transfer case...or both. Your control-trac is computer controlled and computers are notorious for housing gremlins. If it really did go into low you could have seriously...

    O/D Off light flashing

My "O/D Off" light went off again and I noticed that the tranny would "clunk" whenever it downshifted from 2nd to 1st gear. I checked the tranny fluid and it was chery red and full. I reset the computer again and drove it 700 miles home and it the light didn't go off again nor did it make any...

    ACCompresser

    ACCompresser

I don't mean to be a big pessimist but I've seen compressors that have completely seized and a new clutch would do nothing to help them. One guy wouldn't turn off his AC and the belt spun over the pulley so long that it caught his whole engine on fire and melted his car to the ground...

    Flywheel

Weird! When you say "broken", how exactly did they break? Teeth missing, flywheel cracked in two... Are there hot spots on the flywheel? What's the condition of the other clutch components, like the throwout bearing/pilot bearing and pressure plate(if you have a standard)?

    Headers

I saw some 4 to 1 headers in Auto Krafters catalog for about $200. I don't know about the cat back stuff. You can get a catalog from http://www.autokrafters.com for $6....I know I hate paying for catalogs too. I haven't put headers on my explorer because it has enough power for me.

    A/C

Negatory...you'd have to remove the POE oil from the system and replace it with mineral oil. R406A is misible with mineral oil. I wouldn't recommend it. Stay with whatever oil your car came with just for convienence.
