if you wanted to change the fluid on your 02 explorer rear diff why not just pull the 3/4 big plug on the bottom of the cover and just drain and refill it with the smaller 3/8 plug above it.

my 2005 has started making the same noise also. same motor as my ranger had in it but i never see the 4.0 rangers making squeeking noises but i always see 3rd gen explorers making noise.

if you called an oil change place they could look up other filters with the same threads that would go on in place of your filter... i think a toyota filter for like a 2000 model would work. same threads. your filter 1 toyota 3614. hope this can be some help.
