Seeing as you mentioned it's fine when the weather is warmer then it's almost safe to rule out that your motor is getting tired. Take off the interior door panel and check the guides, sounds like they're a bit dry like you've mentioned previously.

A quick search came up with this DIY replacement of the pressure sensor... Looks pretty simple to do. My '00 XLT is doing the same. Not really sure where to start with sourcing that part here is Aust. http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=210435

I run Bridgestone 255/70 16's on my 2000 XLT. Shouldn't have any problem with the sidewall being 5mm higher. Make sure you double check the load rating on the tyre along with what SoNic67 said with the load chart in your door jamb.
