    2001 Explorer-Running out of ideas

Interesting, I will try that for sure. As for the door ajar light, I know why it's on; someone tried to break into the vehicle before I purchased it, and screwed up the driver's side door. it catches just fine, but it doesn't close completely and I'm assuming it's not fully activating the...

    2001 Explorer-Running out of ideas

It just blows my mind. When the truck will run, it runs great, it's got plenty of power, plenty of pickup, etc. It's just getting it to GO that is the problem. I know it has an electrical problem or two, like the lights don't always go off like they should (and are on any time the vehicle is)...

    2001 Explorer-Running out of ideas

I haven't had much time to mess around with the truck, and most of what I've spent with it lately has just been moving it out of the way of my other vehicles. I'm still leaning towards some sort of electrical issue though, but I have no idea where to even begin. The truck has gotten to where...

Primary chain guide. The other's looked like they had been replaced previously. The old plugs looked good. They weren't gapped correctly, but they looked good. Seems like they hadn't been changed in awhile though, considering how tough they were to remove. I didn't technically adjust the idle...

The pump I bought was the airtex E2471. I cross referenced it on multiple sites, and it came back as the right animal. The connector was different, and I had to replace it, just like in "2000streetrods" tutorial. I replaced the pump, strainer, hose. Everything that came with the kit was used...

    2001 Explorer-Running out of ideas

I tried that yesterday via the tire gauge. My first reading was 45, followed by another at 45. I know that's still low, but I had to just walk away at that point. I suppose a plugged line or filter could be the culprit, but I just replaced the filter. It definitely has more flow now, but...

Those codes were indeed pending, but since I changed the intake gaskets, they have cleared and haven't returned. Yes, both 02 sensors are in place. What really confuses me is the key thing. I can't for the life of me figure out why cycling the key on and off seems to fix the issue, which is...

Swapped the fuel pump today. Still runs like crap. No CEL or pending codes either. It does run better, and once it's up and moving has a lot more power, but it will still hesitate from time to time and you have to turn it off and then back on once again to get it to take off. It seems like if...

    2001 Explorer-Running out of ideas

Well, I went ahead and cleaned the throttle body, checked for vaccum leaks, and did a few other misc tasks, and took her on a road test. Same thing. Adjusted the idle: same thing. Grabbed a tire gauge, stuck it on that valve after turning the key on an bingo, 25psi. Tried the test again, got...

So I finally got around to replacing the upper and lower intake gaskets last night. No noticeable change unfortunately. Like everything else I've replaced, they were shot and were flush with the edges of the intake. They were also hard as a rock and several tore when I took them out. I really...

Well, I have been messing around with the scanner and was able to pull the rich on bank 1 with lean on bank 2 as pending. I didn't log enough road time for it to fully load I guess. From the research I've done on here that seems like a tell-tale sign of the shrunken o-ring/gasket problem, and...

    2001 Explorer-Running out of ideas

I bought a scanner, ran it and the only code I'm getting back is the one for the oxygen sensor that is disconnected.

trust me I know. Lol... Problem is that it won't run long enough for me to get it anywhere and get it read. I live out in the sticks, and don't want to risk it leaving me stranded. 750 might be what it's trying to maintain, but it seems to loose it and fall below 5 most of the time.

    2001 Explorer-Running out of ideas

The CEL is on, and it's been on since I purchased the truck. It was supposedly tied to the timing chain guides as per the shop that had been maintaining it for the guy I bought it from. That of course wasn't the case. I haven't had it read since this all started, and I don't have a reader...

    2001 Explorer-Running out of ideas

Nope, no injector cleaner. I did change the fuel filter though. My tune-up was plugs, wires, cleaning the air filter, changing the oil, cleaning the MAF and IAC, and replacing the EGR sensor. That's it, other than removing the exhaust past the pre-cats. Removing the cats DID seem to help with...

    2001 Explorer-Running out of ideas

The more I think about it, the more confusing it gets. The truck had a rough idle when I bought it. I figured it was probably due to the timing guide issue and the loose chain. But it didn't go away once I had replaced the guides. The clatter of the chain was the only change. I figured that it...

    2001 Explorer-Running out of ideas

Fuel pressure...that might make some sense I suppose. I put some fresh gas in it last night, and let it idle for about 15 minutes. I could rev it up some and after awhile it would idle at about 1k. Problem is that if I rev'd it up to about 2.5k it would seem to suddenly miss, rev down and idle...

    2001 Explorer-Running out of ideas

Needing some advice, as I’m just about out of ideas with this truck. It’s a 2001 with the 4.0, and right at 123,000 miles. I bought it back earlier this year, replaced the front timing guides and it did fine up until a couple of months ago. I actually bought the vehicle for my mother and she...

    Erratic Idle and CEL?

Resetting the codes and then waiting for the light to pop back on was my plan, I just haven't gotten around to it yet today. I'm sure that it will clear one or two of them at least. I drove it again today, and the results were the same as yesterday, it drives fine, but as soon as you're...

    Erratic Idle and CEL?

I had the codes pulled last night. They are 113 which pertains to the IAT, 301,302,303 which are all misfires in bank one and 172 and 174. Those two confuse me. They're both for bank 1, and one is for a rich condition while the other is for a lean condition. Part of those are my fault. I...

    Erratic Idle and CEL?

Ok, so thanks to using this place like a repair manual for the past couple of weeks I have been able to correct the dreaded timing chain guide death rattle. I bought the 2001 2wd for a good price because it had the clatter, and I got the complete kit just in case. I tore it down and found only...

    New guy from DFW

Hello all, I've been lurking on your forums for about a month now looking for info about the dreaded timing guide mess. Great source of info, seems like some very wise folks around here. My current project is an 01 2wd explorer that I bought for my mom for what I thought was a great deal. Now...
