    Repacking the bearings

Doing the front end work on my 99 Explorer 4wd this weekend got me to thinking about getting everything on it serviced. I read somewhere else that you can repack the wheel bearings if you take out the ABS sensor and punch grease into that hole. What I do not want to do is screw something...

Need input on the front diff

Thanks MountaineerGreen... Yeah...it is not as bad as I feared it would be. And thanks for the diff. I had a feeling that an alignment was in order....even though I did not disc the A-frame, I was banging around in there a lot. Thanks again.

Need input on the front diff

Well....first off..thanks to all who helped. I contacted MountaineerGreen (Evan) and bought that front diff of his.. The front diff was on my front porch when I got home Friday. I took the plunge and changed out the front diff this weekend. It took both Saturday and Sunday...(Anybody that...

    differential swap

I was in this position last week with my Explorer. I am guessing that your F150 is similar to my Explorer. If so, here is what you need to do. On your rear diff, there is a metal tag. It will have a code. (few digits) There is also a code for the gears on the tag inside the door. For...

    Now a shudder?

    Now a shudder?

Thanks for the idea Brooklyn Bay. I am thinking that is probably not it though. In order for that to have been it, the driveshift would have had to of been bent while I had the Explorer jacked up. I suppose it is possible but do not think that it is very likely. This shudder did not exist...

    Now a shudder?

Yes, I do have MerconV. I did go ahead, since I was already under the car, and change the engine oil. I also checked the tranny fluid but did not change it. It is full. I did not have the shudder before I changed the front diff. and I did not have to open the transmission in any way.

    Now a shudder?

OK...I thought that the issue was resolved but I guess not. My bearings were shot in a front diff and I had to change it out. This weekend, I replaced the front diff. In fact, I found that the lower ball joint on the passenger side was bad also and replaced that. I now seem to have a...

Thanks to all the great write ups here, I have now gotten the old front diff out. I am running into a lot of trouble getting the new front diff in however and I need some input as quick as I can get it. Basically..two things seem to be keeping me from getting the new front diff in.. I did...

    About the Front Axle Nut

OK....I am about to take the plung and try to replace the front diff in my 99 Explorer. I read in a manual that you cannot re-use the axle nut. I just called the auto parts store and they said that you can. Which is it? How bad is it to re-use this once I have taken it out?

Need input on the front diff

Answering my own question... I found another post that talks about the door jamb having the code.. My code is D4 According to the post... 41 - Conventional - 3200 lb. Capacity - 3.27 Ratio 45 - Conventional - 3200 lb. Capacity - 3.55 Ratio D4 - Limited Slip - 3200 lb. Capacity - 3.73...

Need input on the front diff

OK... I have been under the back. I am guessing that you mean the two metal tags attached to two of the bolts holding the rear diff cover on. One tag is.. 75w140 (I know that this is telling me what gear oil to use..) SYMTM (I am guessing this is not the gear ratio as it is all letters.)...

Need input on the front diff

Ok guys... I have searched and searched. I have found post on how to change the gear ratio with new size tires. I have seen many interesting items on how to break down the specs on the Explorer by VIN.. I can not seem to find anything on how to determine what my current gear ratio is...

    Newbie here

I have a 99 Explorer XLT 4x4 with the 6 cyl engine. It has about 102k on it right now. Had it for 5 years. I stumbled across your site when looking for information on my current problem. I was hauling some furniture behind it today and I put it in the 4wd (high) to pull the furniture...
