    optimal cruising rpms?

yes mine does unlock if running 55-60 mph but the rpms change just a little bit, when tipping the brake petal. Still staying at 3000 rpm range. Speed up to lockup and rpms down a little. 2800 rpms. Any ideas???

    optimal cruising rpms?

what is the best way to check see if it's locking up. It shift great. after 55mph it seems like the engine keeps speeding up (rpms) and speed climbs but no lock up, I think. I've read stuff on here and the other post a started, but anything about a MAP sensor to not cause lock up. Or about...

    Are my "rpms" too high?

I'll wait to do the MAP sensor until I get one to try from pull a parts. I believe I will try to clean the valve body. The first two days the transmission was built it did great. But after while some of the stuff in the transmission started to stick up and not drive. After they free all the...

    Are my "rpms" too high?

Did you get a check engine light for this code or just checked. How would I know if the MAP sensor would make mine not lock up, if it is not the MAP sensor. Any way of checking

Has anyone used the Gabriel Load Carrier Shock on the 1st Gen?

Thanks. They might not be stock just have rust. Still will work on replacing them. The shocks on the front are newer. I don't know the brand (white).

    Are my "rpms" too high?

It had been covered before in this thread, but could the MAP sensor be going bad. If the MAP tells the computer to tell the transmission to lock up and it's not locking fully. Could this be it?

Has anyone used the Gabriel Load Carrier Shock on the 1st Gen?

Are you talking about switching to these Bilstein Shock # B46-1569 for the rear. I believe I still have the stock original shocks on the back. Little extra bounce and rusted on them (black). The truck doesn't go much lower while having a load on a 6' x 12' trailer loaded to max (3000lb or less)

Has anyone used the Gabriel Load Carrier Shock on the 1st Gen?

I'm thinking about changing my shocks on the rear. Looking on autozone's website for shocks I notice these Gabriel Load Carrier Shock with coil over. # 43172 Has anyone tried those before? I do carry a heavy load on a trailer thought out the winter hauling firewood.

    Are my "rpms" too high?

I'm with North_Pole_Guy, Yes it does unlock if you tap the pedel while traveling and it will go into the "passing gear". I drive around all the time. I still run 3000 rpms at 65mph. I noticed that when I changed the stock air box my rpms drop alittle. Might do a bigger MAF housing. My speed is...

MAF to Throttle Body Intake Tube First Generation Explorer - Build Your Own

I like the idea of upgrading my stock 4.0 maf housing to an 5.0 housing using the same maf sensor from your 4.0. But I've searched all over this site seeing a few different thing that could or might happened. I've seen people having to retune their explorer after doing this. It this true? If you...

Engine is missing on cylinder #4???

there is a new injector in #4 and still have the same problem. unplugging the wire from the #4 plug on the spark plug. Basically I'm just going to have the top of the engine rebuilt. Reseat the valves. Reface the valves. Replace the valve seals. On all 6. Each cylinder is being check for any...

Engine is missing on cylinder #4???

the plug on #4 was black with a little carbon. After a whlie the plug became wet, but can't be lit. If it had gas on it then it should catch on fire. The rest of the plug looked like the engine is running lean. On #4 the plug looks rich.

Engine is missing on cylinder #4???

I have a 1991 explorer. The truck will not pass emissions because the HC is too high. The engine has a miss, if you remove the #4 plug wire, with the engine running, than the motor will smooth out. Replace the #4 injector. Engine still has a miss. Check compression in all cylinders, all read...

    Are my "rpms" too high?

how can I make the torque converter to lockup? The torque converter is only a year old and the transmission has been rebuilt but never locked up. Here is how my speed is at a constant speed (not speeding up or down). Any ideas?

    Are my "rpms" too high?

OK I do get OD when driving and letting it run up to 3000 rpms. Than it will have a faint shift into OD, I guess. But still running 2800 or more rpms. Would any chemical free up anything or valves? Or just try to adjust the OD band? The truck has been driven everyday that it has been rebuilt.

    Pulling sideways

Looking at the first picture you have I see you have the manual conversion. You probably just need to tighten the jam nuts. As long as the bearing still moves good and never ran dry it should be good. You might want to pack the bearings. -Remove the first nut. Slide of the locking ring. Undo...

    Pulling sideways

if your truck has manual hubs you should have nuts like in the picture (image for reference) but the same on a 91 explorer. It is a hub conversion kit. You'll have to use a special socket to tighten or chould use a punch and hammer.

    A4ld - no overdrive

I can take off in any gear [D] D 2 1 everything works just won't kick into OD. I'm not sure about your problem. But mine did to same thing before it was rebuilt. Something like this, "I couldn't take off in [D] but any other gears work than I would shift from D into [D]."

    A4ld - no overdrive

I've been on this forum before asking about adjusting bands in the A4LD transmission in the 1991. (Read the How to adjust the bands thread) I had mine rebuilt a year ago, OD worked a few times. I had a friend that said that the electic on that system is weak. So my question is that if I only...

After changing spark plugs, truck runs rough

I replaced the about a year a go. But as long as its running everything is good. This only happens if it is restarted when its warm. The exhaust does smell at times, but I also think that the engine burns oil. The CAT did stop up and I was told that the engine has too much gas or burning oil.

After changing spark plugs, truck runs rough

I also change the spark plugs in mine. I know there is no miss firing. But the problem is after you drive for a while than stop at a store for a while, than start-up at drive off. When I do start it up after visiting a store the engine run very rough like a miss, but if you rev it up than the...

Oil Leak, What should I do?

I've been on here before asking about my oil usage in my 1991. With no answers that are helping for me. My oil pan is covered with oil engine, drips very little. Valve covers didn't leak. But I have to add 1.5qts a week. I use 10w-30. Only have smoke if the truck leans on the driver side. When...

synthetic oil Vs. Castrol GTX high milage

oil plug is in and tight. Used a 5qts oil. I drive it everyday. But after a week I how to add 2 qts. (beginning of the week) than on Wed I have to add 2qts more. Small drips under the truck. Only smoke if it leans to the driver side, but no smoke when driving or start-up. I used 10w-30.

synthetic oil Vs. Castrol GTX high milage

I do belive that it might be the valve seals on the driver side. Because if the truck leans to the drive side white/blueish smoke comes out of the exhaust. I just didn't have time to tear down to fix it yet. I guess driving the oil seeps out as it runs. 1991 4.0L

synthetic oil Vs. Castrol GTX high milage

ok so I change my oil to High Mileage oil. But the truck is using more like a qt a day. No white smoke and very small drips. I'm using 10w-30. Is there any thing better? PLEASE HELP!! What can I do?

synthetic oil Vs. Castrol GTX high milage

Mine uses oil. I think it's some of the value seals that the oil is leaking (burning). I have been using regular 10w-30. My truck has 258k on the engine. Will the high mileage oil help to keep the engine from burning the oil as much?

Fuel Reg Went Out Flooded Vacuum System

I had the fuel pressure regulator go out on my 1991. It did the same things was things with the engine light, lean and stuff like that. I was driving and noticed the power dropping.
