(Anecdotal)P0240 remarks & generic question
Parts manufacturers are always going to suggest that you should replace your parts :) They're going to tell you that old parts "can" do XYZ, and it's true, at some point parts wear too much but I wouldn't make a lot from what you observed. The older many things on the vehicle get, the more...- J_C

Rack leak - pressure hose or boot?
If you still can't find the leak, what I'd probably do is buy a new set of hoses and put those on, then if it still leaks, replace the rack too, or just commit to doing both at once considering their age and that it seems more likely the rack.- J_C

ashtray for explorer
When mine was much newer I made a template, folded a piece of cardboard into a V-shape that seemed like it would sit nicely in my floor/center console bin, then roamed a junkyard till I found one of the center dash flip-down styles that roughly matched the cardboard template and fit reasonably...- J_C

2000 Ford Explorer Sport mirror swap
Where are you getting the puddle light mirrors? If from a junkyard, how about pulling out that harness w/connector while you're at it? Just curious, why (when) do you turn them on from a dash switch in situations other than when they'd normally come on?- J_C

Door Edge Guards
Yeah aftermarket. They're around $4 (and up) a set of two at auto parts stores, or closer to $10 on Amazon for a roll of more than you need to do every door on a vehicle. There are narrow and wider versions for different door edge thicknesses. I've seen some with a petroleum based double...- J_C

Does anyone know?
This is not a Ford specific problem, more like a common problem with many vehicles in certain regions more prone to rust. If you encounter it you just take the pads off, clean the rust off (under the slider shims if so equipped) and put a generous (but not excessive enough to glob off) amount...- J_C

Non-Sport excessive brake pedal travel and weak brakes??
Rock Auto shows the same master cylinder for all the engine choices on a 2017. They haven't populated the product listings for the 2018 master cylinders yet. They also show the same Centric aftermarket MC part # at the 2nd link. They also show all 2017 have the same power brake booster...- J_C

Non-Sport excessive brake pedal travel and weak brakes??
^ There shouldn't be that much difference noticed between HD and regular brakes. They are not set up to be some kind of hair trigger sporty feel. You should never notice a difference except under extreme driving or hauling or towing a load, maybe less fade going down long hills. Could be...- J_C

Non-Sport excessive brake pedal travel and weak brakes??
I'd bleed the brakes just to make sure there's no air in the lines, and if that doesn't resolve it, or you prefer to have someone else look at it, take it to a dealership or trusted mechanic. My '14 XLT brakes fine, does not have hair trigger brakes but no excessive pedal travel nor jerking...- J_C

2016 Explorer Total LED Swap
They're supposed to be yellower. LED swap to a colder color temperature bluish-white light for fog lights is the worst option, is as likely to create a wall of reflected light back at you instead of seeing through the fog. Your vision could be worse with them on than off. If you do go LED...- J_C

Stereo Problem - Protect Mode - HELP!!

Stereo Problem - Protect Mode - HELP!!
If it's a speaker wire, I'd first look at those in the doors since they flex every time the door is opened. Then again depending on the wiring job to install the new stereo, something could have gone wrong there, bad wire crimp that didn't hold or whatever.- J_C

Stereo Problem - Protect Mode - HELP!!
I'd consult the manual to see if it offers any hints, maybe somehow the faceplate is loose and tripped the theft circuit so it needs a code entered, or try removing power by unplugging the harness in the back or disconnecting the vehicle battery for a couple minutes.- J_C

New Brake Pads, New Issue
You might end up with greater contact surface area but it could vary. The coefficient of expansion is higher for (iron) rotors than brake pads so they're not going to fit together the same cold as hot.- J_C

which is greater engine wear from turning on or left idleing?
There are a couple other things you can do with many lawn tractors to charge the battery faster for shorter run usage. One, they typically have two alternator coil sets, one for battery charging with a single diode for rectificaton, and one coil set for AC to lights. This is the typical setup...- J_C

New Brake Pads, New Issue

which is greater engine wear from turning on or left idleing?
Check your state laws, in some it is illegal to leave an unattended vehicle idling for some period of time. I wouldn't be very concerned about engine wear either way in those two scenarios, but would expect that you'll wear out the starter faster... though not 20X faster since starting a...- J_C

Did you rotate the engine to cyl #1 top dead center and/or use a special tool to align the camshaft sensor? I've never done this myself but best I can gather, it needs aligned correctly. Did anything look wrong with the old sensor, maybe wiring or connector for it is bad instead of the...- J_C

Driving 1,200 miles any tips?
Typical things, check battery water level, hoses, belts, wipers, and any other mantenance that ought to have been done but hasn't been yet. Wipers only working on high is probably either the GEM having a subcircuit fault or the steering column wiper lever itself failing.- J_C

Loose Gas Tank Baffle Fix?
I wonder how it appeared to be attached in the first place. Was it welded and rust broke that free? If so it seems like time for a new tank. If it broke, maybe just pull it out (hole too small?) and see if sloshing is a problem, otherwise get the two mating surfaces clean and try epoxy but...- J_C

Dealer keyless entry/antitheft information
See if there is an FCC ID# on it, that can help to determine origin. However even if you ID it, you might have a hard time finding remotes to purchase for a ~ 21 year old alarm system. If the vehicle is fully functional without it hooked up, then I'd assume they returned the wiring to a...- J_C
