EGR code means no pass smog. I have been thinking about it throwing codes. The exhaust manifold on the Fusion was totally different than the Ranger. It appeared to partially block the exhaust passage to the EGR. I didn't think about it then, but maybe it's got a lot of buildup and needs to...

Over the weekend I put the engine through several heat cycles. Code reader shows no issues. I had a partial can of R134a and when I put that into the AC system, it started blowing cold. I took a drive to a auto parts store to pick up another can, Ranger ran great. When I was leaving the...

Took it for its first test drive. Drove about seven miles round trip to fill up the tank. I dumped a bunch of injector cleaner prior to filling it with premium. After I dropped off a Amazon return, the CEL appeared. Code reader showed a EGR code. I'm hoping the fuel additive triggered the...

Someone who does engines like 410Fortune could make good side money doing this. I'm in this for under $1,000. In his area the Focus and Fusion engines are cheaper. Buy a 2.3 Ranger with a blown motor for under $2,000, $300-400 for the engine, double that for misc parts. Sell it for $10K.

Bought Daughter a 2010 Ranger, She Paid it Off, Blew Engine, I Replaced Engine.......

It's huge for Sarah. The truck was worth maybe $2,000. KBB says it's worth $8,000-12,000 now. I cleaned up all the wiring, reinstalled the inner fender, tire and hood. Its ready for a test drive. I need to reinstate the insurance and play musical vehicles to get it out to the street, so I'll...

The Sears charger is at least 40 years old and still works great. I figure I should put 150-200 miles on the Ranger, then change the oil/filter and trans fluid/filter because it's due. Then I will turn it back over to the daughter.

Thanks for all the help everyone. Brought a dead truck and a engine that was sitting in a junk yard for two years back to life!!

Bought Daughter a 2010 Ranger, She Paid it Off, Blew Engine, I Replaced Engine.......

It's a runner!!!! I filled it up with fluids, and installed the battery. Pulled the fuel pump fuse and cranked it for ten seconds and the battery died. Got out my old Sears battery charger and cranked it another 30 seconds. Truck has no oil pressure gauge, just a coolant temp gauge so no way...

Bought Daughter a 2010 Ranger, She Paid it Off, Blew Engine, I Replaced Engine.......

I got everything installed, plugged in, etc., except for this one plug. I can't find where it goes. It's on the back passenger side of the engine, and the wiring harness is short so it's mate should be within a few inches. It's part of the main engine harness. Everything else was fairly easy...

Bought Daughter a 2010 Ranger, She Paid it Off, Blew Engine, I Replaced Engine.......

No impact on soft parts. They came out easy and got swapped snug. A normal deep socket would have fit if the plug wasn't so tall. Deep sockets narrow down past where the bolt head or nut fits. This cheap one is thin walled the entire length. Sometimes, cheap is better. If I used an...

Bought Daughter a 2010 Ranger, She Paid it Off, Blew Engine, I Replaced Engine.......

The real deep socket was delivered last night. The ad called it an impact socket, but its very thin-walled. Being thin walled made it easier to get down through the small access hole in the valve cover. It worked fine to swap out the head temp sensors. Another tool I'll probably never use...

It's ridiculous. The plug hard plastic and 3" above the sensor. A deep socket won't clear it. Need a extra deep socket or a small space sensor socket set. My O2 sensor socket won't fit because the sensor is recessed into the head.

Everything except the intake and that sensor is back on the engine. Need to clean up some of the wiring with some zip ties. About half of the wire clips are broken. I'm shooting for starting it on Saturday. I talked to my neighbor who has a shop this morning. He suggested pulling the plugs...

Cylinder head sensor sure looks the same, but the plug pins are in the wrong places. Had to order a 6" long 19mm deep socket that should ne here tomorrow. I got some of the accessories on, but can't install the intake as the sensor is underneath it. :banghead:

Maybe a turbo kit after the truck retires. It's currently on injured reserve. It will be nice to return it to active duty. I've been searching cylinder head temp sensor part numbers. Some brands have the same number for Fusion and Ranger, some don't. Amazon shows most of them as being...

I've had several Fords and had never seen one before. I was referencing the things people seem to know about engines on this forum. I wasn't being sarcastic or questioning. Sorry if it looked that way

I have been searching for the past hour and can't figure out what this sensor is for. It's on the back of the engine mounted to a small bracket. It seems to serve no purpose that I can see. It came off the Ranger engine, wasn't on the Fusion engine. Plug Thinking maybe it's a ground...

It would have been just as easy to do a 2.5 swap and the PCM wouldn't have known the difference. I figured that out after I had already gotten too deep into the replacement engine to change direction. Same block, same parts swap, common Ranger swap, etc. It was tempting to drag it up to...

Bought Daughter a 2010 Ranger, She Paid it Off, Blew Engine, I Replaced Engine.......

We pulled the old Ranger engine apart. The #2 piston races were cooked and scored, and the oil passage was clogged with metal mud. The #3 piston race had a gouge in it. Looked like a piece of metal got in there and chewed it up. All four pistons looked like they got real hot. Anybody want...

Cheaper and quicker to manufacture is my guess. The reservoir hose arrived in a box big enough for four of them. I got it installed. I'm leaving the intake off until the engine goes in. It sits about an inch from the firewall and kept us from dropping the transmission tail down to get to the...

I was cleaning up some of the mess we made swapping parts and I found a very thin washer. I had read online that some of these engines used a diamond encrusted washer to help keep the crank pully from loosening. It goes between the crank pully and cam gear. I didn't see one on either engine...

Thanks for finding that. Little hose goes to the vacuum tree, then to the EGR, through the EGR and into the block. Makes perfect sense!:banghead:

Bought Daughter a 2010 Ranger, She Paid it Off, Blew Engine, I Replaced Engine.......

I cut the old part open. It's a T with the small hose running into a vacuum tree on the back of the intake. The vacuum tree has five vacuum lines. One comes from the EGR, one from a valve on the driver side fender that looks like it goes to the transmission, a small one to the heater core...

The hose to the vacuum was dry when removed. We were thinking there is some type of vacuum pump valve in there to assist getting coolant all the way around the engine? I think I need to cut the old hose open and see what's what.

Replaced gaskets on everything I could take off the engine that I had gaskets for. Installed the valve cover and torqued it to spec. New spark plugs. Old plugs looked original and were dry and clean, just worn out. Cleaned up the few more parts that need to go back on before the engine goes...

Think we found what failed. There is a lot of noticeable wiggle in the #2 connecting rod. I'm guessing the bearing and race are fried. I might pull the engine apart to see what failed before I junk it. If I pull it apart, it will fit in the recycle bin.

Got a lot done today. Resealed the water pump, and thermostat housing, and swapped the oil filter adaptor. Rebuilt the fuel injectors and swapped them and the rail. Completed the VCT delete. You have to use a intake cam and sproket off a non-VCT engine. The cam and sproket on the Ranger...

Didn't get the oil pan glued on today. While I was cleaning up the mating surfaces I realized the rear main seal is part of the mating surface. Ridiculous design. I had to put the engine on the cherry picker, remove the flex plate, and replace the rear main, then put it back on the engine...

Not much to report the past week. I've been waiting on small parts, mostly the delete and timing kits. The delete kit came in for the balance shaft. This little piece of machined aluminum and a bolt take the place of 19 pounds of power robbing metal. Every 2.3 Ranger I ever drove has a...

Good Info, thanks. They must be talking about valve lash because these deletes are usually used by the racer types with modified cams and oversized sprokets. I have removed most of the parts from the Ranger engine that need to go on the Fusion engine, mostly to clean them up as everything is...

I was looking at the oil pumps this morning. The Fusion has a smaller sprocket and larger chain tensioner. RA is a great resource for looking up parts. I looked them up on RA and the part numbers are different, Ranger vs Fusion. Then I looked at the data sheets for both. Neither give...

This engine swap is a lot more work than I originally anticipated, but every time I think I'm sunk, there is a easy fix. I ordered a balance shaft delete kit off eBay for half the price of the one I linked. All it does is block the oil port. In the last pic I posted, you can see the oil port...

I removed whatever that big heavy thing is. It's got four bolts holding it in place. Under it is a large gear next to the #3 piston rod. The oil pickup tube off the Ranger fits on the Fusion pump, but I'll have to tap two bolt holes in raised bosses on the Fusion engine.

The head gasket is a little farther down into the engine. It's not leaking so I'll leave it alone. The oil pumps are different. The tensioner is bigger and the sprocket is smaller on the Fusion engine. Ranger Fusion Ranger Fusion Ranger Fusion And, what the heck is this thing...

I did some reading in my Ranger Haynes manual. Setting the timing is fairly simple with a timing tool set. There is a plate that locks into slots on the the cams at TDC. The other tool bolts into a port on the side of the engine, locking the crank at TDC. The crank pully is located on the...
