1998 Explorer 5.0 “Restoration2021” project
Motor is paid for. Gonna pick it up tomorrow and figure out where to squeeze this into my schedule. The good news since I did the swap last year, I have lots of extra parts and pieces and I should be able to dress the motor before I even pull the current engine.- SuperGordo

rack and pinion pressure and retun line seals
The blue o rings you can find some right sized o rings probably made of viton that will work. I can't imagine anyone who sells them specifically for the rack. Installing the rack and pinion assembly in these explorers is challenging enough. Using a used rack could be frustrating. As far as the...- SuperGordo

Well my daughter called me today and wants to get the EX back on the road. She is waiting on a tax return. With my Commercial account I can get a rebuilt 5.0 for $2200 with a 4 year warranty. And luckily now they have ready to go motors at the rebuilder. Which in October they did not. So I can...- SuperGordo

Ya know, when I rehabbed it originally when I started in 2021, if only i had replaced the balancer. It was one thing i left alone. And when it failed, im sure thats why the main bearings went bad. But should have would have could have. All that being said. Its still super clean, has basically...- SuperGordo

Well I’d love to report an all is well message. However about August the “new” engine in the EX melted the number 3 piston ring, It blew the radiator in about a minute. It still runs. But can’t be driven. Ive had some personal stuff going on the later half of 2024 which has slowed me down. We...- SuperGordo

Called the Ford dealer. They have the oil sender in stock. Going to get one today from there and see if I can get the dash gauge to work. My Daughter has to renew the registration then the EX can go back on the road. At this point I figure it needs to drive and if anything comes up I can deal...- SuperGordo

Did a cold start this morning. Scanner shows coolant temp at 82 degrees. The EX started right away. I'd think that the vacuum leak I fixed had a small part in the rough cold starts. I need to make sure I have some type of working oil pressure gauge and send this vehicle out for daily use.- SuperGordo

OK. Got the EX passed smog test this morning. "Cold" starts have been good. Need to find a better oil pressure sender. Need yet another mechanical oil pressure gauge. Ran the cylinder contribution test and there is no longer any misfires on 7. That's good! I also ran the idle control test and now I can get the idle real low during the test. Installed the cluster oil gauge. It's in the right position and it activates when the key is on. But it stays at zero. I think the oil sender isn't getting a good ground. As I have a couple adapters in there for the external oil pressure gauge too. So need to check that out.- SuperGordo

Ok first start today. Coolant temp 82.5 degrees. 81 degrees outside. Started perfectly first try. Also replaced number 7 spark plug. When I pulled the boot off the brand new number 7 plug wire, the metal clip broke off the wire and stayed on the spark plug. SO I just swapped the other number 7...- SuperGordo

Ok, here is how today went. Work forced me into a junkyard run. So I grabbed some EX parts while I was there. I was lucky to find a 98 5.0 Mountaineer. So I went out and did the first start of the day. I plugged in the scanner and it showed 75 degrees at the ECT. I grabbed a laser thermometer. The coolant in the radiator was 78 degree, everything else on the engine was 78-80 degrees. Outside temps at 845am 80 degrees. All seems normal. Did the...- SuperGordo

I tried swapping a Duralast IACV in place of the Hitachi one that I currently have. The problem got worse. Ok, Here is what I did today. Replaced the fuel pump and fuel filter. Replaced the MAF. Swapped in a used rear O2 sensor. Swapping the o2 sensor fixed the P0141 code. Model year is 1998 paint code is RC. Which I believe is medium Platinum metallic. My brother lives in Phoenix, so if you do find a nice tailgate dropping it there is fine. I put a fuel pressure gauge on the rail this morning. PSI went to 30 then started to decline. Once it starts it's running at 24psi.
