    1998 Explorer 5.0 “Restoration2021” project

This engine doesn't have the oil cooler. The original one does. The "substance" is oily, but it is orange. Not milk shaky in any way. I'm not sure. I decided to call it a night and eat some thanksgiving leftovers. I'll flip the engine over again tomorrow and take another look at the ports.

Just flipped the engine over to plastiguage the number one main and the rear coolanf ports on both heads leaked out some of this crap. Its oily and orange.

When i get the timing chain back on I’m going to pull a main cap and a rod cap. So far everything is very clean inside.

    1998 Explorer 5.0 “Restoration2021” project

Did a bit of pre Thanksgiving engine work. Cleaned up the bellhousing as there was surface rust from the engine sitting around. And installed the new rear main seal. As well cleaned up the oil pan gasket surface.

This is what is on the “new” engine. Anyone have this?

Ive seen a similar design cooler fail on a Turbo PT cruiser. I have to consider there is 260,000 miles on mine. Might be best to eliminate it.

Seems like yesterday I did the first two.

The original engine in the EX has the engine oil cooler with the heat exchanger where the oil filter goes. The new engine being from a 99 had a different oil filter adapter. Anyone have opinions on the two?

I’m working the plan! We will get there!

It’s Deja Vu all over again! This one was a tad more pesky than back in February on the original engine. Drilled a hole in the broken bolt, then promptly broke the end of the extractor off in the bolt. So i welded a bolt on top of it. And it started to come out, then sheared off the portion of...

    1998 Explorer 5.0 “Restoration2021” project

Started cleaning things up tonight. Pulled the plugs. Started cleaning off gasket surfaces. Pulled the timing cover. The water pump bolt that broke was only corroded into the timing cover. I know you’re all familiar with that. The thread in the block moved freely, so i just spun the cover off...

I have a 3.73 rear, but without LSD. Someday I'll upgrade that. So many possible projects!

Yeah, it's pretty funny that I have been driving around with it in the van for weeks. I have a 97 E350. It didn't even notice that the engine was back there.

Still haven't unloaded the new engine from the back of the van! What a month I've been having!

    Explorer ST smoking on startup?

Great question. I'm still smoking. Taking it to the dealer soon. Hard to part with the car for a couple days.

The cast manifolds that I pulled from the new engine are in great shape. They should work out fine!

I still have the engine in the back of my van. Need to unload it and get the valve covers, timing cover and oil pan off. I will be looking at the bearings.

As long as they are a bolt in replacement I'll use the cast iron manifolds.

I would say the welded ones. Patch work. They are not shorty headers or anything like that. I'm not in front of the explorer currently. Hold On I have old pictures here somewhere.

I removed the exhaust manifolds today. All the exhaust bolts came out easily. No broken ones at all. Didn't even have to fight them. This engine has the cast iron manifolds. What is everyones opinion on the cast manifolds versus the tubular ones? The old motor has the tubular ones.

OK, I got the upper intake AND the lower intake off. I broke one Intake bolt. And I'm sure everyone can guess that one too. Thankfully since the last time I had to extract those previous broken intake bolts I got my MIG welder back from my buddy. So that hopefully will make things simpler. All...

    1998 Explorer 5.0 “Restoration2021” project

Did a little tear down on the new motor tonight. Got the water pump off and the right side accessory bracket. I tried my hardest but still broke one water pump bolt. I know you all can guess which one! Passages inside the timing cover and water pump are fairly clean. SO that is a good thing. I...

Thanks! Need to keep the EX running. I don't get to drive it much, but it is fun to drive. As well I've done so much good work that is still holding up I couldn't let an engine that died at 260K be the death certificate. At this point if I can get this motor in the EX and running well, and...

    1998 Explorer 5.0 “Restoration2021” project

The engine is clean. But I'd guess they pressure washed it at some point. And I was told it has 115k on it. but who is to say. Clearly it has been sitting out side of the vehicle for some time. Not sure that I'll send the heads out. At minimum i'll do the valve seals. So now I move into " how...

I got to San Diego and back yesterday with the "new" engine safely. Left at 4am, got home at 8pm. Had a nice drive with my son. Talked about car projects all day and other fun stuff. We don't get that opportunity too often. So it was a nice drive.

Luckily this one is 2wd so no transfer case! I'm considering pulling the trans too and opening the 4r70w and inspecting it. Put a seal kit in it possibly. We'll see how I feel at game time!

Outside of the obvious. Anyone have any tips, tricks, warnings, and experience they want to share with pulling the 5.0 from this. I've done countless engine swaps, including the 4.0 sohc in an EX. Just not the 5.0.
