1998 Explorer 5.0 “Restoration2021” project
This engine doesn't have the oil cooler. The original one does. The "substance" is oily, but it is orange. Not milk shaky in any way. I'm not sure. I decided to call it a night and eat some thanksgiving leftovers. I'll flip the engine over again tomorrow and take another look at the ports.- SuperGordo

Did a bit of pre Thanksgiving engine work. Cleaned up the bellhousing as there was surface rust from the engine sitting around. And installed the new rear main seal. As well cleaned up the oil pan gasket surface.- SuperGordo

Ive seen a similar design cooler fail on a Turbo PT cruiser. I have to consider there is 260,000 miles on mine. Might be best to eliminate it.- SuperGordo

The original engine in the EX has the engine oil cooler with the heat exchanger where the oil filter goes. The new engine being from a 99 had a different oil filter adapter. Anyone have opinions on the two?- SuperGordo

It’s Deja Vu all over again! This one was a tad more pesky than back in February on the original engine. Drilled a hole in the broken bolt, then promptly broke the end of the extractor off in the bolt. So i welded a bolt on top of it. And it started to come out, then sheared off the portion of...- SuperGordo

Started cleaning things up tonight. Pulled the plugs. Started cleaning off gasket surfaces. Pulled the timing cover. The water pump bolt that broke was only corroded into the timing cover. I know you’re all familiar with that. The thread in the block moved freely, so i just spun the cover off...- SuperGordo

I removed the exhaust manifolds today. All the exhaust bolts came out easily. No broken ones at all. Didn't even have to fight them. This engine has the cast iron manifolds. What is everyones opinion on the cast manifolds versus the tubular ones? The old motor has the tubular ones.- SuperGordo

OK, I got the upper intake AND the lower intake off. I broke one Intake bolt. And I'm sure everyone can guess that one too. Did a little tear down on the new motor tonight. Got the water pump off and the right side accessory bracket. I tried my hardest but still broke one water pump bolt. Thanks! Need to keep the EX running. I don't get to drive it much, but it is fun to drive. As well I've done so much good work that is still holding up I couldn't let an engine that died at 260K be the death certificate. At this point if I can get this motor in the EX and running well, and...- SuperGordo

The engine is clean. But I'd guess they pressure washed it at some point. And I was told it has 115k on it. but who is to say. Clearly it has been sitting out side of the vehicle for some time. Not sure that I'll send the heads out. At minimum i'll do the valve seals. So now I move into " how...- SuperGordo
