I've done dozens of Jmods. Removing the 2-3 spring isn't harsh. I will use the updated springs for the 1-2. I won't remove any springs there.

Soon we will service the trans an do a Jmod. As well as replacing hte broken rack and pinion I posted about a couple weeks ago.

I'll have to check. She bought the tires without me. We discussed the actual tire, But I wasn't there. I haven't driven it yet. I'll get the answers you seek. But I'll need a day.

The EX is going in for a brand new set of tires today. We put some used tires on at the beginning to get her going. One of them blew out a week ago. So my daughter is switching out the old ones. I'll post up pics when she is done.

    1998 Explorer 5.0 “Restoration2021” project

Speaking of screw clamps. One of the clamps on the lower radiator hose between the water pump and the oil cooler got tweaked just enough to cause a leak that looked like a water fountain. Luckily my daughter saw the puddle before she took off to drive back across town. So I had to drive 25 min...

I'll put the scanner on it tomorrow. Keep in mind that the computer looks at the temp from the sensor near the thermostat and the guage runs off the one one the driver side of the manifold.

I did replace the year old thermostat just for good measure.

Ok. Ill through this out for the group. One thing that has happened with the Ex since the recent work. Is that the temp guage won't read over the C. Never did this before. Obviously I disturbed plenty of things doing the intake gaskets. But the guage operated normally immediately before the...

    1998 Explorer 5.0 “Restoration2021” project

Alright success! No more puking water pump. New balancer is a winner. Engine is silky smooth once again. A joy to drive. And I made sure the AC is ready for summer. Ice cold! 4 days of effort. But we are good now! Next stop, replace the rack and pinion...again.

    1998 Explorer 5.0 “Restoration2021” project

When I did the water pump in 2021 the previous owner had broken off one of the long ones and covered it with RTV. I pulled the timing cover and worked the broken bolt out that way. As for the trans I have a lift. But I'm making my daughter pay for these parts for her repairs. So she is saving up...

    1998 Explorer 5.0 “Restoration2021” project

I agree with you. I'm not upset about doing any of this work. Thankfully the water pump is a pretty simple job, as is the balancer. I keep in mind that this EX has 260,000 miles on it. Just needs some love here and there. She drove it a year so far with no issues in between. So I think that is...

It was Chinese. Duralast from Autozone. New balancer is Dorman, all I could get quickly.

Yeah the weighted mass roatated probably 40 degrees ATDC. If you look carefully the weight moved backwards towards the tone ring. I'm curious now. Did the waterpump leak enough onto the balancer to make the old balancer slip. or was the balaner causing vibration enough to ruin the water pump.

    1998 Explorer 5.0 “Restoration2021” project

I'm going to get this wrapped up this morning. I'm going to install new connectors for the coolant temp sensors while I'm in there. They're in bad shape. Have to replace teh rack and pinion again probably next weekend. No time today for that.

Ok got the pump off. Looks to be leaking from the pump shaft and the weep hole. So that’s outta here! Took the balancer off and by all accounts the center has spun some. So I think that explains the vibrarion. Tell me what you think of the pictures. I marked TDC and some other spots in red to...

    Explorer ST smoking on startup?

I live in Las Vegas. I will be taking it into the dealer soon. I was just trying to compare experience. This car is new, so the dealer can handle it. Just trying to compare if my car is unique or if others have had the same issue. The amount of smoke is not normal. It's a cloud. Not just...

I'm going to pull the water pump today. I'm almost certain it is leaking at this point. But only leaks when it's running. I will double check the wires and firing order. Wires were brand new motorcraft when the car went into daily service Feb 2022. I even put heat protective socks over the wire...

    1998 Explorer 5.0 “Restoration2021” project

Well now that the intake manifold gasket is replaced, the cam synchro and all the hoses have been tightened. I know the water pump is leaking. Funny that it passes a pressure test, but when I run it it dribbles down onto the balncer and makes it way down the oil pan. So much for an almost new...

    Explorer ST smoking on startup?

Keep in mind this car has 15,000 miles on it. It's definitely oil smoke. I'm just curious if other folks are having this problem with the ExST

    1998 Explorer 5.0 “Restoration2021” project

Got the EX back together today. No more p1309. No check engine lights. So about a week or so ago my daughter reported to me that the engine was vibrating more than typical. The engine has been nice and smooth since I got it running. I assumed that the cam synchro was really bad and it was time...

I think sealant on the middle 8 bolts and antiseize on the 4 corners makes sense since the 4 corners threads are exposed to the elements.

    Explorer ST smoking on startup?

We have had our 2022 ST for almost a year. Some days when you start it up cold it will emit a pretty good cloud of smoke. It's definitely oil smoke because I can smell it. The car is at 15,000 miles right now. But this is randomn, it doens't happen every time. It is unmodified. Anyone else seen...

Well the major contributor to getting these broken bolts out was the Oxy Acetelyne torch. The first one came out with a left handed drill bit. I was widening the hole and it started to come out on it's own. The second one got pretty hard and was pretty hard to drill. So in the end I used an...

Got one out nicely. Then my oxygen tank ran out. On my way to a friends to borrow his tank so I can complete the project. Second bolt is all drilled out just need to heat it again and spin it out. I'll update once I'm done.

Got the intake off today. Bad news is the two front intake bolts broke. So that’s fun. Have to get those out in the morning. Need the EX back on the road by tomorrow night. Also had codes for the cam synchronizer. I posted about that a couple months ago. Finally getting to all this. The cam...

    1998 Explorer 5.0 “Restoration2021” project

I buy worm drive clamps wholesale at Autozone. A 10 pack is $2-4 depending on clamp size. The super nice ones at the hose shop are $2-3 each.

That's great! I've had some work well, I've have some fail. But you are right for sure that the new worm drive clamps aren't very good in most cases. my local hose shop sells some very nice worm drive clamps. But like Mbrooks420 stated, you'll pay for them.

    1998 Explorer 5.0 “Restoration2021” project

Only problem I've seen with the original spring clamps is they get old and lose their spring force when they are reused. Not all the time, but I've reused them and had them leak.

    1998 Explorer 5.0 “Restoration2021” project

Had a decent look at the EX today. I did find some loose hose clamps that were leaking. I tightened those and pressure tested. Seemed to stop them. My daughter is dropping the EX off to me Friday night. Saturday I will pull off the fan and check every hose clamp. As well I need to change the cam...

I will check the water pump, but I did replace it when I put this EX together. But new stuff does go bad, so we'll see. And thankfully no water in the oil!:)

    1998 Explorer 5.0 “Restoration2021” project

Worth noting that it's likely a loose hose clamp. I can see a light amount of coolant on the serpentine belt. Everything else is dry. I pressure tested the system and nothing came out. So we'll see.

Calling all MY2021 MY2022 Explorer ST, Platinum, King Ranch and Aviators: rear subframe poll

Jeez I'd love to tune mine like that, but my wife drives it primarily and she got 4 speeding tickets in the first two months. I can't imagine her with a 12 second ST...:dead:
