    2010 Explorer Transmission Problem

@alex5357 The solenoid which is faulty may be easily replaced by removing the oil pan, in the vehicle. If you are concerned about clutches, bands, servos, thrust bearings and such, you will need to remove and disassemble the the transmission. The suggestion to check the quality of the fluid...

    2010 Explorer Transmission Problem

@alex5357 Pressure Control Solenoid B controls hydraulic pressure to the transmission's components when in 2nd. gear. It influences the shift from 1st. to 2nd. It still allows low pressure to act against Solenoid A pressure, while in 1st. gear. To analyze the true problem adequately requires...

Does it matter how the fuel lines are connected on 3 line fuel filter

@Drewmcg Can you explain why there are two connections on one end? I replaced my '04 and do not recall that at all. Thanks! imp

Rear axle more over to the passenger side

One thing not mentioned here that applied long ago to Ford 9-inch axles, and still does today. First, if the axles are of greatly differing length, for whatever reason, the longer one "winds up" more than the shorter. This is "factored in" to reduce tire spin on one side, as torque applied to...

    Auto Start-Stop Technology

@blwnsmoke True enough for the newest stuff, but one can still fall back on the earlier EFI vehicles, say, 1990s, and get the fuel economy benefits and reliability minus all that newer, er, .....****, if you will. imp

    P0741

@bobditts Was the solenoid module replaced as part of the valve body, or the old solenoids re-used? Reason I ask is, in my case, I never got the "wrench" icon, only the CEL. But, I can see how the valve body could easily cause the TCC malfunction. imp

    P0741

@boominXplorer @Yataku We need to understand that not all failures are "seeable" by the PCM on a one-to-one basis. The TCC is like that, it can fail itself in one of two ways, neither of which is detectable directly. It can lock-up and refuse to release, or it can remain disengaged and refuse...

    P0741

@Yataku A good thing about Ebay is that there are several "fail-safe" factors involved, as well as histories of each seller's length of time there as well as their sales volume. Each vendor has a "reputation" which is developed by the purchasers. The buyer is given an option to write...

    P0741

@Yataku Note the pin numbers in the upper table are "looking into" the main harness, disconnected at the PCM. The pin numbers in the solenoid resistance chart below that are with the connector at the transmission disconnected and measurements are taken directly from the solenoids in the...

    Transmission?

@Explorer_PL @ohiodisneydad What is MLPS module? My thoughts here center around the Transmission Range Selector Switch, TRSS, which is fastened with two screws on the left side of the transmission case. If it is slightly loose, vibration may jiggle it out of position, confusing the...

    P0741

@Yataku Keep in mind that the OD, which is 5th. gear, is not related to the Converter Clutch. IOW, even if OD is manually switched OFF, the transmission may still operate with the clutch engaged while in 2nd, 3rd, and 4th gears; this depends on vehicle speed and throttle position. Those...

    P0741

@Yataku OK. @michael loibl said: "a few possible causes include: bad torque converter, lock up solenoid, speed sensors, control module, or related wiring." The last code specifically calls out the Torque Converter CLUTCH Solenoid as not operating. Rule out the Torque Converter or it's...

1999 XLT - Rear Diff Rebuild Time

@kythri If you ask that, I suspect you may not understand fully the importance of the spacer, or maybe it's purpose. It establishes and maintains the pinion bearing preload, one of the most important parameters in the entire rear axle. The pinion bearings are highly stressed and turn very fast...

DPFE black plastic vs aluminum units different outputs

@shucker1 The DPFE is a proportion determining device, thus the starting point output when key-on occurs should be captured output-wise then, as you said (if the programmers are savvy enough). imp

2 row radiator vs 1 row

@J_C OK, thanks for that! Note in the table, the first column has no entry for brass. I believe we are comparing thermal heat transfer in several different ways here. I used the classic Thermal heat transfer expression Q = mc (Delta t), where Q = quantity of heat transferred, m = the mass of...

2 row radiator vs 1 row

@J_C I couldn't find a coefficient of specific heat for brass, so used copper. Brass may have as much as 95% copper and 5% zinc, so used copper for comparison. There is no sense splitting hairs, as there are so many variables involved. Where did you determine value for brass? If I'm wrong, I...

2 row radiator vs 1 row

@donalds Efficiency and cooling capacity are two different things. @974X4BLACKSPORT is correct in what he stated, but did not explain the concepts. For example, let's say a 1-row radiator is 60% efficient. Putting in another row will result in less overall efficiency, say it will then be 50%...

1999 XLT - Rear Diff Rebuild Time

@kythri I would ask how many miles has the 4.56 been driven? 4.56 gears are a bit rougher on things due to the extreme pinion speed. With 30" tires the pinion makes about 3100 revolutions per mile. Thus at 60mph, the pinion is spinning at 3100rpm. Your choice of rebuilding all bearings is a...

Can someone tell me what model trans I have

3rd gens began with 5R55W, then switched to 5R55S in either '03 or '04. My '04 is 5R55S. They differ only in the gear ratio of 2nd. gear, but switch one for the other will throw CEL codes for "incorrect gear ratio". imp

    O2 Sensor Spacers?

@410Fortune Yes. What I did was modify the L-shaped spacers to have the male thread at the other end, which made them rotatable in the bungs without hitting the curve in the exhaust pipe. So far, I can't comment yet on their effectiveness. No CEL, but codes pending. imp

97 V8 AWD help diagnosing leak from accident

@koda2000 I believe I'm seeing the rear CV joint of the front driveshaft there, could be among four seals: Transmission output shaft, in Adaptor, T-case input shaft seal, T-case output shaft seal, or T-case front output shaft seal. The replacement seal I received for T-case input shaft had two...

@ng07exglenn Nice splice job! Good soldering, good shrink tubing. I detailed just how the gas pedal/TPS combination was designed to work in Post #13, here: Inexpensive Adjustable IAC if you care to look. The more we can figure out about this stuff, the less likely we wind up needing a Dealer...

    Inexpensive Adjustable IAC

@1998Exp I've been sort of shut out now by others, for some reason it's always helped me to understand the theory behind some A.H.'s design, and seems you see it too! Early 2000s, one or two Japanese makers implemented DBW without doing enough homework. No fail-safe built in, their cars...

    Inexpensive Adjustable IAC

@J_C Understood and agreed! Here's my two cents: I have never seen an IAC which allowed air to enter from the outside; all the pics above are similar confirming that: the IAC mounts in such a way to the throttle body that it's two holes "straddle" the throttle plate. IOW, the IAC allows air to...

    5R55S to rebuild or not

@Krater IMO, if you get another trans to rebuild, you have no assurance it is not in worse condition than yours. Not certain, but see no reason why the torque converter clutch could not generate debris. At any rate, Ford will not sell a reman trans without a reman TC replacement also. Get...

Bank 1 downstream O2 sensor question

@satherman "Can a signal from downstream bank 2 o2,(after cat) be ganged up or spliced on to bank 1 o2,(after cat) using a diode or two?" I believe the PCM operates by continuously scanning it's program, thus "looking at" each O2 output individually, but very quickly. If nothing is found...

    Solved AC Clutch Repair

@Coolbrz Good analysis! Usually, when an A/C clutch begins to slip, it gets replaced in total. They like to sell clutches! I am not knowledgeable enough to say whether those clutches have a lining material, but if they do, it just may be that your lining has worn to the point that removing...

Help, transfer case locked up in 4wd

@mikepier If not AWD, no drift in park. No problem without front driveshaft. If no noise was being made by the transfer case, it likely is not busted. Possible causes are locked-up Electronic Clutch, or broken/jammed shift parts in T-case, any of which is fixable. imp

Has anybody modified their charging system?

@BrooklynBay 8 feet of copper wire size 2/0 has a resistance of 0.0006 Ohms. Thus, 250 amps passing through it will drop (lose) about 0.2 volts, double that because there are two current paths (if both 2/0, if engine block, neglect that drop). As I said, LENGTH is very important. You might...
