My 98 XLT 5.0 Finally Goes Under The Knife

But does it match your experience? There's a discrepancy somewhere between the consensus of most threads (that a 4.6 driveshaft will work) and the fact that they don't for some people. My theory is that it's a transmission difference, but haven't been able to confirm.

My 98 XLT 5.0 Finally Goes Under The Knife

I think the driveshaft length is specific to the transmission. You may have a driveshaft that was sized for a 4R100 rather than a 4R70.

Resurrecting the PATS Key Copying Debate

Yes, the third is assigned a new unique code. Any two of the three keys now in the system could be used to add more.

Resurrecting the PATS Key Copying Debate

Because that's how the PATS system works whether you choose to accept it or not. You posted a generic explanation from a vendor on eBay that wasn't specific to Ford, much less any particular generation of PATS. Simply put, PATS requires two distinct keys that are already in the system to be...

Resurrecting the PATS Key Copying Debate

Why do you insist on talking down to people trying to explain the system to you? What you quoted from mbrooks made sense. If you're unclear on a particular point, ask a specific question. As to the vendor info, that is specific to having two existing keys. said

Resurrecting the PATS Key Copying Debate

I didn't even read the ebay link other than what was quoted in this thread. My comments are based on existing understanding of the system, ie what I learned before programming my own second key a few months ago with Forscan. As to cloning, my impression is that some lock smiths have a simple...

Resurrecting the PATS Key Copying Debate

I'm not clear on what you're confused about. The dealer delivers the vehicle with two keys that have unique (to each other) codes. To use the normal procedure Ford provides to the customer for adding keys, two unique keys are inserted. You cannot create a new key using that process without two...

Resurrecting the PATS Key Copying Debate

The computer needs to see two unique key codes to allow programming. A properly programmed key has a unique code, but a cloned key will match the first key so the computer won't allow a new key to be programmed.

Do they sell aftermarket center console lids?

Thanks! Any idea what you'd want for one?

Do they sell aftermarket center console lids?

Not sure about the OP, but I'd love dark gray. Anything functional would be okay though since I have several things to dye/paint as it is.

Do they sell aftermarket center console lids?

I've been watching ebay and haven't found a complete lid with hinge for a reasonable price yet. If you happen to see one I'm all ears.
  14. F

Do they sell aftermarket center console lids?

Interesting. I wonder if we're looking at different types of lid. I also need one with the hinge.

Do they sell aftermarket center console lids?

I'd just like to find a lid at all. I picked up a center console from an '02 STrac last weekend that's missing the lid and they don't appear to be cheap to replace.

1999 Mountaineer 5.0 AWD Build Thread

I can't find a single review online for one of their lifts. Best thing I ran across was somebody installing a work in progress lift design on a Tacoma. Seems like a ton to spend on something without any real background to verify?

    Sport Trac Rear Axle

Apologies for the thread necro, but wanted to correct something since this comes up to the top when googling the Sport Trac axle... The Sport Trac should have 31 spline axles, -not- 28 spline.

    4.6 Engine differences

My parents have an '02 Explorer with the 2v 4.6 that apparently has bottom end issues. I've been looking around for a replacement engine locally and found this '00 Crown Vic: http://roanoke.craigslist.org/cto/1646507465.html How significant are the differences between the two engines? Are...

To keep or not to keep the Body Lift?

Keep the body lift, makes it easier to access things underneath that would be close to the body otherwise (bellhousing bolts, etc...). Run 37's with both put together and call it good.

    diesel engine swap

Yes, but they have been used for rwd/4wd conversions in the past, so there has to be something out there... Somebody sold a kit to use them in Sammy's for a while?
  23. F

    diesel engine swap

I'd be more inclined to do the VW conversion as well. Regarding the Euro PSD working with the M5OD transmission - you do realize that there's more than one bellhousing pattern that the M5OD is cast for, right? There's a pattern for the 2.3/2.5, one for the 2.9/4.0, and one for the 3.0. Each...

I need Explorer Brain power! New to the club

You MUST get all the old R12 out in the process of doing the conversion. You need to have the system evacuated by a shop, and then you need to replace the orifice tube, etc... If you don't, you run the risk of getting a sludge buildup in the system (the oil used with R134 is not compatible...

I need Explorer Brain power! New to the club

The conversion kits can easily destroy an a/c system if not done properly (and they rarely are). I'd guess wheel bearings too - pull both front wheels off and see if the outer locknuts have backed off. Very common on the D35.

Pinging? What does it sound like?

Lugging is placing a load on the engine at low RPM. Always better off running in a lower gear than lugging it.
  27. F

Pinging? What does it sound like?

Certainly could be. Lugging the motor is the easiest way to generate it. Sort of like marbles in a coffee can?

    Explorer 99-01 8.8 Axle 4.56 from Factory?

I think the few factory 4.56 axles were 31 spline. Don't hold me to that, though.

    Transmission Question

Brian, to the best of my knowledge the PVH hubs were only used on the Rangers from -98 through mid -99. I don't think the Explorers ever had them. Caleb

    new ratio?

+1 for 4.56. No loss on or offroad, dramatic improvements in both.

    the new guy

I was doing the math on this earlier... with the Mazda trans and 33's, I think I came out to running around 3100rpm at 85. Still comfortably below peak hp, so unless you're planning on cruising even faster than that, you wouldn't lose any power by going that low.

Removing 3" BL, just too tall & Death Wobble

Thanks... just trying to get some perspective here. I'm considering a 2-3" BL and down the road an SJ Class II (when I can afford it). Good to see how well that much lift seems to clear 35's.
  33. F

    the new guy

Go 4.56 if you're going to switch... No disadvantage over the 4.10's, and it's that much easier on the transmission.

help me get my flywheel off!!!

I would be nervous about putting a screwdriver into the teeth. What I did was jam it between two of the bolts, with the handle over towards the frame rail. I can't believe I'm asking this (and don't take it personally), but you are treating these as normally threaded bolts, right? Assuming...

help me get my flywheel off!!!

Heh... my cheater bar of choice. As long as it fits where you need it, that's the way to go (and it will fit for this, because that's what I used to get mine loose).

Temp Gauge Does not Remain Steady

More weirdness (and another 94 Explorer): When I bought mine, the temp gauge would shut off after the truck had warmed up. A few days later, it returned to normal (for about a month). Two weeks ago, I noticed that the warm shutoff issue had returned, followed a couple of days later by the...

    power leather seats...and burnouts question

If they're just standard power seats, there's nothing to it. I swapped a set of 98 seats into my 94 on Saturday. The drivers side was power, but both had lumbar so they both required running wire. Bolt in was identical, only hardware difference was the seat belt slider was the wrong length...
