About a year ago I replaced my lower ball joints, but didnt get an alignment, will I have to get new ball joints also?

I have a 97 xlt 4x4 and Im going to do what I presume is the first transmission change on it ever. The Hanes manuel and the stock manual have different numbers on how much fluid it takes. Also if it is a shallow or deep mounted tranny filter. Any help would be greatly appriciated.
