    '99 explorer won't start

    My '99 explorer sport, 4.0 l sohc just makes a whiring noise, not the normal sound when cranking, the engine turns and get a small "whomp" once in a while. Any ideas? I made the mistake of thinking it was the starter from the sound and didn't look to see the fan and everything else turning.
