do you know about the valve to piston clearance? if the cam chain has slipped, is it possible a valve was bent? do i need to pull the head to be sure?

hi- just bought a 99 sport 4x4, 4.0. the driver's side valve cover has a hole in it made by the chain to that side's sprocket. is it possible to make the necessary repairs/adjustments to the chain and/or tensioner without tearing down the whole front of the engine.-zeus
