Did you try to crawl through the back seat to unlock it manually? I think once you do that you can open the hatch and diagnose the problem more thoroughly. Sounds like it might be a bad wire. I know by using the button to unlock it more than using the key tends to let the tumblers inside seize...

I need to replace the inner u-joint on my '94 explorer. My question is how do I get the axle out of the diff? Is there a locking paw or do I have to remove the diff? A schematic of the whole diff assembly, including the axles, would be nice if anyone has one. Thank you in advance for your help...
