    Parking brake cable explanation required

Thanks. I just thought there might be more to it, because I can't imagine how one spring will make up the difference in tension. Mine is missing, so I'll find one to try, but I'm leaning towards the foot pedal cable replacement. There's a good two inch play side to side when slack. Thanks again...

    Parking brake cable explanation required

Can someone please explain to me how this parking brake cable setup is supposed to work? I've just replaced the drum shoes (what a PITA!) but there's a lot of slack in the cables so I'm thinking I need to replace those as well. But looking at the picture, I can't even see how they are supposed...

4x4 low will not engage but 4x4 high works - P1822

When I bought my old Explorer it had similar 4x4 shift issues. The previous owner had been told by a mechanic that the switch at the transfer case needed replacing. But I read online somewhere that sometimes the switch gets stuck/corroded through underuse, and all you had to do was short the...

    Sport Trac 03 A/C

134a is banned in Europe, and being phased out in the US by 2021 I believe. The stuff I'm talking about is R12a, which is legal and sold here in Canada.

2003 Sport Trac. Does not start when it's hot.

Old thread this, but I wanted to post an update. After a couple of more repeat events, it turns out that this was happening when the passenger kicked the connector to the fuel switch (as suggested by koda2000 earlier). The switch is mounted in a pretty silly place right in the footwell. If...

    Sport Trac 03 A/C

So the A/C has never worked on my ST. I caved in to the heat today and thought maybe I'd try a recharge with Red Tek 12a. According to their info, pressure on the low side should be around 38psi when the job's done. When I connected the gauge to to the coupler though, it shot all the way up to...

2003 Sport Trac. Does not start when it's hot.

No, there was no impact or jolt. In fact I was on the smoothest and newest highway around here. I appreciate the pump switch is an anti-fire device, but my understanding was that it activates when there's a major drop in fuel pressure, such as might happen with ruptured fuel lines in a crash. I...

2003 Sport Trac. Does not start when it's hot.

My '04 ST has been problem free since I bought it a couple of years ago, but it shut down suddenly on a recent road trip. I'd been driving non-stop for a couple of hours at 120km/h in 35degC. That's not a summer temp we've seen around here for a long time, and not a speed I usually travel at...

    Towing ability of 04 ST

Yes, I have the hitch. I'm just looking at trailering a 21ft boat to and from the ramp. Just 5 or 20 miles depending on location. Weight including trailer will be around 5000lbs...

    Towing ability of 04 ST

It's the 'adequately equipped' part I'm struggling with. Looks like I have an upgraded diff, some kind of factory installed payload/tow package, and a transmission cooler though, so I'm leaning towards the idea that it's equipped to handle 5300lb.

    Towing ability of 04 ST

Great info on FordETIS. Thanks for the pointer. My ST has these features listed: Payload Upgrade Package and Light Duty Trailer Towing. No mention of how much weight that means I can tow though...

    Towing ability of 04 ST

I have a '04 ST V6 4x4 LTD. Axle code is D2 which I know means it's a 4.10 Limited Slip Differential. What does that mean with regards to towing capacity? I hear everything from 3500lb up top 7160lb depending on tow package. How can I tell if I have the package which gives me max towing capacity?

    Coolant sensor issue?

The temp gauge on my dash doesn't seem to be working properly. The needle only rises just above the cold mark, and then drops below it again after driving a couple of clicks. I'm presuming the drop is because the thermostat is opening up properly when the engine is warm, and that there must be...

    Wheel size change

My 2003 Sport Trac has 255/70/R16 tires on it. The mags are pitted and the tires are worn out, so I'm looking to buy a new set of both. The local shop says that it might be an idea to run 17" wheels instead and change tire size appropriately. Any comments? Good or bad idea?

    Diff Oil topup

Can't see any leaks. Just can't feel the oil with my fingers. The truck is new to me so I haven't got the oil change schedule. May as well replace it all I guess...

    Diff Oil topup

I checked the level on my rear diff and its low. The manual says I should add one of two types of oil depending on axle type. Mine is a D2, which is limited slip. Is that the same as Traction-Loc? Should I use the synthetic oil? If so, when topping up do I need to put in more additive?

    A/C condenser replacement

Doh! Guess I'm a newbie at transmission cooling too. I can take being an idiot twice in one day for the sake of a simple $100 swapout though. Thanks for the quick reply!

    A/C condenser replacement

OK, I'm an idiot. I won't bore you with the details, but whilst working on my new baby (03 Sport Trac XLT) I managed to go and puncture the A/C condenser. End result, a puddle of red oil all over the garage floor. It looks like an easy replacement with only two hoses coming out of the bottom of...
