There seem to be a few different problems on in this thread. Since yours is a 4x4 I would look at Turboexplorer and Surfcop. I haven't figured mine out as i left the country but I when i get back to it the first thing i will check is the bearings in the diff and the tube. I checked...
Have the same problem in my 98 xlt 4wd. same swooshing sound that sounds like a bad wheelbearing but it isn't. It starts around 25 mph and then the frequency goes up with the speed till 40 when i think starts to sound more like a continious grind.
