well, at the time my understanding was that the internal parts of the transmissions are the same setup, just beefier on the 5r trans. but the 5r was controlled differently..... so basically the 5r55e is a 4 speed trans, but overdrive gets applied in the top of first gear to make a shorter...

ok, so im having some issues.... ill start at the beginning. my girlfriend picked up a really nice '96 eddie b. awd explorer with the 4.0 for next to nothing. it had a bad transmission in it, and wouldnt even move when in gear. just so happens her brother had a wrecked '98 4x4 ranger...
