´94 4.0 xlt explorer will NOT engache 4x4

My car is getting old, although I never had any problems at all, but today the 4x4 light does not come on and I could not tow a boat onto a steep road.
When you press the button at dash ,light will come on softly, but when you release button light is off!! What could cause this problem. I´ve very litle used 4x4.
I thing there is a electric motor at the transcase and that brushes could be seized, or damaged???

Welcome to the site.

It is common to have Transfer case shift motor problems when it is seldom used. The motor can get "Frozen" into position. Try searching this board for threads such as Shift motor problem you will find many hits. Can you engage 4x4 low at all? (Gear in park, foot on the brake, then hit 4x4 low).
