00' Explorer 5.0 limited
i bought a used 5.0 limited with AWD about 8 months ago. low mileage vehicle for anyone, around 88k when i got it. had the problem right after i got it, only up larger hills and when it was hotter than 80 degrees outside. i changed octane to 89 and it seemed to go away. now i know i shouldnt be masking the problem but now i run 91 octane and this truck today was pinging all day under any sort of load on the freeway from 50mph+ HOWEVER if i go WOT the pinging goes away. perhaps the Mass-Air Meter is dying on me, its the only thing i can think of. going to run a quick decarbonizing solution this evening and see if that will help tomorrow. does anyone have experience with this. i have no Check engine light along with no codes.

I would suggest cleaning your injectors and checking your plugs.

I had a 2000 V8 and I had the same problem. Went parts chasing and couldn't find the issue. Full EGR system was replaced, plugs a couple times, sea foam. Nothing seemed to cure it. I never tried changing the MAF though.

i will pull the plugs this evening. it only does it on the passenger side, so perhaps i will swap plugs and wires from side to side and see if the pinging follows the parts swap. also, in regards to the MAF sensor, i read on this board there was someone with a very similar problem and after parts swapping, finally he changed the MAF and it rectified the issue

If it does it on ONE side only, then is not the MAF...

My question is, how can you tell it is "pinging" on only the passenger side? Pinging is detonation, caused by excessive heat in the combustion chamber, either from fouled plugs, excessively lean fuel mixture, too hot heat range plugs, excessively advanced timing, faulty EGR valve. I am sure there are other factors, but these are the most common.
But, please explain how you know it is pinging only on one side.

Yeah, I'm pretty good at tracking down noises, but I can't tell which side of an engine pinging is coming from when the engine is running and I am in the driver's seat.

Could you possibly be talking about a different noise?

Are you sure it's not a cracked manifold? They're pretty common to break on the passenger side. Not insulting you, just trying to keep an open mind.

Well i finally made a trip outside of L.A. specifically to replicate the problem. the noise it definately coming from both sides of the engine and only during heavy acceleration. if i hold it in any gear around 2750 to about 3500 rpms medium load the engine almost sounds like its pinging, or like a valvetrain noise from a collapsed valvespring or something. i honestly have never had an engine make this much rattlng noise ever... think i may have to pull the valve covers off and do a compression check to see if that gives me any mroe information

How about checking the coolant temp with something more accurate than the guage on the dash? Like an OBDII scanner or a scanguage - something that can be used while the truck is being driven under load so it pings. Also check the intake air temp with the OBDII scanner - it should be close to outside air temp when driving on the freeway.

Engine 5.0 ping

My 99 Mounty 5.0 was pinging when I first purchased it but quieted down after I ran some fuel cleaner through the tank.

Just a thought! ;)
