My 2000 XLS (OHV) has started a nasty habit of pinging at highway speeds. It happens after about 20 minutes of driving, when accelerating in overdrive. If I run the pedal down slowly, it will ping so bad it sounds like it is going to fly apart. I've tried different stations and brands of gas, makes little if any difference.
What causes this? Isn't there supposed to be a pre-detonation sensor? I'm really surprised that my 2000 vehicle has the same stupid problem as my 1980 T-bird. The plugs are almost new and are gapped properly.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Blue
