Just wanted to tell everyone what fixed my "clunk" sound which would occur after coming to a stop when the body would settle back down. A friend said both her sisters had explorers that did the same thing.
Driveshaft slip yoke lube seemed to solve the problem. Slip yoke must have been binding as rear end rotated back after stopping.
I used moly grease (molybendum fortified lithium grease). Disconected the shaft from the pinion, removed the boot clamp, slide the rear half off, cleaned and lubed and reassembled.
The "clunk" went from 100% of the time to 0% after the lube. I hope it lasts.
P.S. I did notice that after greasing, the slip yoke splines were "sealed" with grease and the air was being compressed creating a spring effect. Maybe this is helping the splines slip and not bind up. Could actually put a mech spring in there if there is enough travel....
Hope someone finds this useful
