I was having a high idle issue with heavy downshifts. immediately thought IAC. went and got a BW from advanced auto and it didn't fix the issue, worse, now my truck was throwing trouble codes. Pulled off the Borg Warner and put on a new Morotcraft. (Yes motorcraft is the way to go) MOtorcraft IAC took care of the trouble codes but not the high idle. Started checking for vacuum leaks none found.
So i'm sitting waiting to pick my wife up and pissed off that my truck is idling at 1500 and on a whim i stick my foot under the pedal and lift up. Boom, idles down to 750. WTF you might say. Turns out the 2002-2003 have cables not throttle by wire. The throttle by wire didn't debut til the 2004 model year. So i crawl under the dash with a can of wd 40 to try to lubricate the cable a little bit. and this is what i found.
The plastic sleeve inside the cable had come loose and was bunched up against the back of the pedal stopping the pedal from fully resetting.
new cable
took me 30 minutes to change. So if you have an 02 or 03 and cannot seem to figure out your high idle issue, stop throwing money at new sensors and check under your dash.
the cable cost me 61 and change from the dealership (cousin works there as a service writer= discount) you will probably be looking at the 100+ range unless you have a discount or possibly rock auto can hook it up. Cable is not offered in the aftermarket, dealership only.
