02 4.0l engine question

Can anyone tell me the purpose of the foam pad that sits in the "V" of the 4.0 V6 engine? I do know it makes a nice home for a rat that filled it up with sunflower seeds from my neighbors birdfeeder.

I think it is for noise dampening...

I found dog food in my air cleaner box, darn rats.
