I just bought an 02 explorer 4x4 v8 last friday. the rig has 33k on it and when I got it home wnd was playing around with the 4 wheel low setting i could not get it to go back into 4 wheel auto. It continued to make this great buzzing sound from the 4 wheel drive computer behind the glove box. The only way i could reset it was to unhook the battery. I tried several times to get it to function correctly, but with no luck. Does anyone know if this is a computer issue or a transfer case issue? It is not on warranty and this issue was not disclosed at the time of purchase. Any help would be great.

Ok, so i pulled out the 4x4 computer that was making all the buzzing and I noticed that in the top corner there was some corrosion imbedded in the silicone, this had interrupted at least one if not two or three of the circuits that are imbedded in the board. I'm assuming that this is my problem as the car will shift into 4x4 but will only revert back to auto when i disconnect the battery. So. . .does anyone have a 4x4 computer for sale for an 02 4.6l explorer. I looked on ebay with no luck, might have to start scouring the wrecking yards. thanks

The '02 4X4 Control Modules are prone to failure. I haven't heard of one buzzing before though, usually they quietly depart and you don't know until you hit an icy patch and realize you have no 4X4 auto. You can get a new module for about $150 from an online discounter or you can try the wrecking yard route. There seem to be more than module used for the '02s that are not interchangable though. Here's a long thread about it: http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=163694

Good luck.

Welcome !

Hmm just checked rockaut.com but didnt see it.

See how much it is from ford service.

Had mine replaced by dealer under warranty. I drove for few weeks with reseting it by disconnecting the battery every so often. She would engage 4x4 and stay that way.
