02 Explorer is not shifting into gear.

I have an 02 v-6 explorer, it started a while back, when we started it, it would be 4x4 low, it would shift into auto, although the light would flash on and off. After a little while, it would not shift into gear at all, if you put it back into park, you would hear a grinding. If you disconnect the battery, it would be fine. I have replaced the selector switch in the dash. Now, at start-up, the 4x4 high light flashes, I can push the 4x4 auto, and the light will go away after a couple of times, but you can hear the switch "clicking" in the dash. Where do I go from hear?

Well the dash lights flashing could be a fuse but most likely not, b/c that would mean that your windows wouldn't work and interior lights don't come on... when you put it into and out of 4x4low you should be in "N" and at a complete stop... try that and see how it goes.
