'02 Explorer with A/C Problem

I took the truck in to get checked out. Diagnoses is A/C Compressor locked up with the clutch locked up as well. I could smell the belt burning off as I drove it in short distances. I bought a driver belt that bypassed the clutch and was thinking about taking off the old clutch and putting a pulley on just so I could have the old belt back on. Any suggestions on how to maximize the life of the belt until I can afford to get the A/C compressor fixed?

Can't you keep driving on the shorter belt until then? So long as nothing else is jacked up it should keep working right?
