Hi,

I can hear a 'metallic' noise just before the tranny changes gear. It is not such a strange noise, I could live with it but I wonder if it is the first sign of a defective tranny . Though I am not 100% sure where the noise comes from.

113k, 02 XLT, 4x4, A/T

Any idea where I can look ?
Thanks,
Remi.

I brought it to a trans shop. They opened it, verdict :
- torque coupler broke and bring some shave metal all over the trans breaking some other components (solenoid, etc...), result : $3019  (18h labor @$80) to have it rehauled... including parts for update and 3 years warranty....

.. well... having bought the vehicle some months ago at a Ford dealer "as is", I think I got screwed !

5r55e strikes again...

but yeah u deff got shafted

(I'll show my ignorance here) I thought all '02s had the 5R55W?

It sounds as if the torque converter resulted in the tranny getting damaged. I suppose I would not replace/repair one without doing both at the same time.

It seems that there are several examples of Ford torque converters failing in the 100K mile range. Coincidentally (or not), my father's previous car (Ford Windstar minivan) had its torque converter blow out on vacation in Florida a few years back. Had around 100K miles on it, too.

Sorry about your bad luck. Perhaps you can now keep this vehicle a long time, since one of the most concerning and expensive repairs has been done?

God Luck.

Wow 3k I would have gotten one out of a bone yard but at least you "should" be good for the next 3 years.

It is a 5r55w/s almost the same as a 5r55e

ok, as you people seems to listen to me, I am going to complain  again... at this cost, I can, no ?

So I got my Explorer back yesterday morning, result :
- noise is the same...
- there is an additional noise when I brake : coming from the passenger seat. it seems to be the switch to light on the brake lights, hopefully it is not serious...

But for my transmission repair : I guess I have answered the wrong way when the guy called me last week, saying the noise came from the transmission indeed and asking $615 to open it (would be waived If I do the repair).

I guess the noise is from the exhaust or something (I have scheduled a test drive with a Ford dealer today, hopefully he will be less thief) and the trans guy was happy to see me coming and sold me a full update of my tranny... for $3000, that I didn't really need...

At least I have a 3 years/36,000 warranty on the trans now...

at least you know what you have.....it was inevitable about the tranny going not now but for sure later, no waste of money in my opinion just early is all

timing belt tensioner

Just following up about my bad experience:

Then I went to a Ford dealer : after some test drive : "it is the timing belt tensioner ! $1000 but if you change your oil regularly, you don't need to change...."

Exact, after oil change this week, I don't hear anymore the noise.. what's the heck !

Anybody have same experience with the timing belt tensioner ? Will the noise come back every time the oil is too old ?
Is it better if I use a specific oil ?

Thanks,
Remi.

that's new to me....hmmm

well I have 4.6L and it had that weird noise I thought at first it was lifters but the noise was a bit different when started to check the engine 4 noise it kindly nor prrety define from the front of the engine ..... anyway i checked timing chain and had both tensioners broken w/ bit and peaces in crank! hopefully no teeth jump so i just exchange it w/ a whole kit chain tensioners crank sensor etc and even in you tube you can see many videos w/ similar problem (just 4.6 fords though..!!) 4.6L engine knocking

For what it's worth, we race 4.6 motors. They're great. But one weak link is the aluminum timing chain guide rails, which have plastic inserts. It's our belief that engine harmonics are actually what cause the guides to go bad, and not actually bad guides. Old age would do it too.

The motors sound like they knock when that happens. A stethoscope on the front timing cover ought to clue you in to any noises. There are 2 large timing chains, one per side. Each has a guide, a hydraulic tensioner, and a guide pin. I have heard of guide pins failing too, on occasion. The guide pivots on the guide pin, which is basically a dowel pin.

Once you get the front timing cover off, that's an easy fix.
