just failed my smog check cuz of the O2 sensor. Wanted to see if you explorer geniuses knew which one I need to change. the ODB Fault code is:

"PO133 O2 Sensor Slow Response (Bank 1 Sensor 1)"

Checking on autozones website, it says there are four. I went there in person and the guy said there were two. Can anyone help me with this. How many are there? Where are they? and with the info provided, which one do I need to change?

The location of the four given on the autozone website are:

1) UNDER HOOD, PASSENGER SIDE, UPPER ENGINE AREA, MOUNTED ON EXHAUST MANIFOLD

2) UNDER HOOD, CENTER, REAR ENGINE AREA, MOUNTED IN EXHAUST MANIFOLD

3) UNDER VEHICLE, PASSENGER SIDE, BELOW SEATING AREA, FRONT OF CATALYTIC CONVERTER, MOUNTED IN EXHAUST PIPE

4) UNDER VEHICLE, PASSENGER SIDE, BELOW SEATING AREA, MOUNTED IN EXHAUST PIPE IN REAR OF CATALYTIC CONVERTER

Thanks in advance to everyone.

There are 4 O2 sensors on the V8. Since your Explorer is a Sport, you don't have the V8. You either have 2 or 3, but definately not 4. I believe you have 3, but double check with another '96 4.0L V6 owner. If you have 3, then one will be mounted on each exhaust manifold, just before the 'Y' adapter. The 3rd will be mounted after your last catalytic converter, before your muffler. The sensor that caused the code would be one of the 2 before your catalytic converters, on bank 1.

Y3K, as Robert says, you probably have 3 O2 sensors. The number 1, bank 1 is first in line on the passenger side exhaust header pipe. You will have to change it from underneath the vehicle. It'll be visible when looking upwards from the oil filter area.
