Hello fellow Ford owners!

I recently took my 4.0 out of the 03 explorer due to jumped time. But the weird thing was, only the right cam jumped time, no broken cassettes or tensioners. Just so happened the camshaft some how slipped.

After inspection I noticed it moved towards the front of the block and the timing chain sprocket area appears to be extended to the back of the block. Refer to photos to see what I'm talking about. It hard to explain, and this is a first time seeing something like this.

Have you all seen this before and any help with a resolution would be great. Just looking before I decide to replace the cam, or worse replace the engine.

Thanks I advance

Lol, its called a jackshaft. Odds are you have a bent valve. If thats the case its far more economical to replace the engine. Either way it has to come out.

P.S. Your pictures dont work.

I'm not the sharpest tool in the sheed, but pretty sure I'm talking about the camshaft. The jackshaft runs in the upper middle of the block, I'm referring to the long pipes found above the heads, that requires timing.. but thanks for the heads up.

I see the pictures now, My mistake. Looks like either the gear on the cam is backwards, or the gear on the jackshaft is backwards pushing the cam forward. Just had the guides done by chance?

Thanks for joining, it's great to have you here

No,changed the valve cover after it been sitting for a year. Replaced the tensioners. It ran for about 10 minutes in idle then jumped time. So I pulled the valve covers back off and checked the marks, to confirm it truly jumped time. And thats when I noticed the cam was off. I pulled the otc 6488 out to time it and that when I really noticed the cam was not in the right place, as if the chain stayed in one place and the cam was still moving. It's mind boggling that this happened. I don't even know the cause. But almost sure it bent a valve.

If memory serves me right, the cams just float, the chain holds it from moving forward or backward, so something must be jamming the chain forward to move the cam forward. If its out of time and bent a valve you are better off just finding a wrecker engine or ordering a reman.

I didnt get to do a compression test, but was thinking the same. ... thanks
