Hey Guys,

Starting to look like i need a new starter. I have a 2003 Explorer 4.0L XLT AWD

Anyone have recommendations on which brand to go with? Looking to not spend a ton but obviously dont want to go the cheapest possible route either and have the thing conk out on me 2 months in.

And any how to's on removal-installation? Not sure how difficult of a job this is going to be

Thanks Guys!

You can get it cheap at the wrecking yard, once you figure out how to remove it.

Otherwise, I'd only buy an aftermarket version that is new.

I've not had the pleasure of removing it (I have on my '94, but it's probably different.) But as I understand it, there's one bolt on top that you basically can't see.

Removing it is an absolute pain in the rear on an AWD or 4x4. Do not cheap out on one as this won't be a job you are in a hurry to repeat. On a 2wd they are easy.

My starter drive made lots of noise, 94K, when I bought the EX. Bought brand new starter from NAPA, expensive, stuck it in, noisy just like old one. Now at 150K, still noisy, still works fine. Use a long extension with socket wrench, ratchet applied in front of and above the engine mount, if anything like 5.0L V-8 in a Mustang. imp
