Couldn't find anything on this so wanted to start a new thread. 2003 Ranger auto 2.3 runs fine, shifts ok but grinds/whines when shifting from park to drive. Any suggestions?

first thing i would look at is the fluid, make sure its at the proper level and that its not burnt. when was the last time you changed the tranny filter? it could be clogged causing a pressure drop inside the transmission valving.

Thanks, fluid looks and smells good, not burnt. I adjusted the bands as per but didn't change anything...

I bought this truck "not running", lot of miles so I got a decent price on it. The not running was a fuse. Runs great and the little 4 cyl will smoke the back tires! Besides the whining when going to drive, there is sometimes a delay when it shifts from 2nd to 3rd. Didn't know if the two were related, maybe a solenoid or valve sticking...

Still looking for some advice with the "whirling" noise when shifting to drive. Reading some other threads, I see there is mention of a "update kit" for these trucks. Is that for the delay in shifting or other issues? Any help appreciated :banghead:
