BTW it only has 49000 miles on it. Thanks

more detail would help. does it start and keep running? does it stall right after or spudder and not hold idle? have you drove it like this?

Does it sound like valve noise?
What kinda of filter and oil are you using?
Easiest thing first is try a Motorcraft filter and the right oil 5-20w. . if you haven't. First guess is that all the oil is draining back into the pan maybe??

other than that it could be the chain tensioner,

it has nothing to do with the idle, the thing runs like a sewing machine. It just sounds like maybe it's not getting enough lubrication for the first couple of seconds. Thanks

How about the oil & filter question? What do you have in/on it now?

Hi what you are hearing is the timing chain rattling before the tensioners pump up and take out the slack. I know this because my 04 4.6 with 50k does this exact same thing after sitting a couple hours or over night.

I have tried different weights of oil and different brands of filters to no avail.

The only solution is to replace the tensionsors. Mine has been like this for 20k, ford would not fix it, they said it was normal and not harming the engine. So far so good, but I plan on tearing the motor down this summer and replacing the tensioners at least and maybe even the guides.

thats my .02
