Hey all, retired my 94 explorer 208,00 miles for a 2004 model 54000 miles. I wanted to check the 4x4 system today so I pulled in a blacktop parking lot to try it. I know you should not drive it in 4x4 on dry pavement so I was VERY carefull. When in 4x4 high or low and I turn sharp the rear end almost feels as if its locking up then it pops and will go a bit futher and repeat the same thing. I am just barely moving the truck when this happens. Is this normal or something I should be  with?
THANKS ALL!!
Also does the same thing in the yard

Sounds normal to me... my 04 will do the same thing on dry pavement

It happens because the front wheels and rear wheels are turning at the same time however on a sharp turn, they turn at different speeds, causing the popping you feel as the slower faster wheels push the slower wheels

Thats no way to test your 4x4 system. Even wet pavement is going to cause that.

Happened to me when my 4x4 was going bad and needed to have the module replaced.
