04 Tranny problems

Well it happened....I have an 04 Explorer XLT 4x4 with 69k and the tranny has started to hesitate and clunk into reverse. all the forward gears still operate smoothly but I wonder how long ot will be before they start to slip too. I know that Fords solution for the repair is to replace the selonoid (with mixed results) and I was hoping that someone here might be able to give me some better guidance on how to make a "complete" repair.

Welcome to this forum! Replace the solenoid block (read Borland's thread on this), flash the PCM, and install a new tune for the computer. It should fix the problem.

Brooklyn....2 questions
1. Can any reputable shop flash the PCM or is that a dealer only process
2. I was with you right up to the install a new tune for the computer....what is this?

The computer has a program for controlling the shifts. It's a good idea to upgrade it to the latest version. Some transmission shops are capable of doing it, but not all of them. Check the list of shops in your area on WWW.ATRA.Com. They basically erase the old program, and upgrade to the current version.
