05 MOuntaineer all dash lights go on and off

My dash lights work and then don't work. this includes the instrument cluster, radio and HVAC lights. I thought it might be the headlight/dimmer switch. I have 2 mountaineer so I swapped the switches. My problem still exist in the original vehicle and the donor vehicle is just fine the suspect switch. the odometer works and the led display on the radio work. It acts like the dimmer switch but its not. I don't believe this is an instrument cluster issue because it is all the lights that would be controlled by the dimmer. When the lights come on the dimmer works just fine and then they just quit working. Please help.
