05 Mountaineer AWD
Let me first say hello to everyone. I'm new to this forum and to this vehicle. I'm a long time Ford enthusiast and this 05 Mountaineer is replacing my 94 T-bird.

Now for my question. The cd player hasn't worked since I purchased the truck. Its the six disk verity and it won't allow me to load a cd. It always comes up "load error". So, I've been looking on ebay for a replacement, but I'm confused as to which one I need. There are several that resemble mine but there seems to be a couple of different mounting types. So, I'm not sure which one I need. My Mountaineer is also equipped with a rear dvd player. So, I need to make which ever one I get plays nice with it. I also need advice on how to remove the defective unit. I tried to pry away the trim pice around the radio, but was afraid of damaging it. I'm not even sure if that is how you get to the radio.

Thanks in advance......

I've been watching this thread for an answer - I have an '04 Mountaineer and feel the information may come in handy one day. Hopefully someone here will be able to either provide instructions or at least give you a general idea of what needs to be done.

You may want to consider getting a Haynes manual for your vehicle. Most questions regarding removal procedures are answered in there, since the manual is based upon a complete teardown and rebuild of that particular vehicle. I just ordered the Haynes Explorer/Mountaineer manual through Amazon.com for about $18 as I recall.

Often there's a special tool that is used to remove radios, like some flat tool you slide around the sides that release some clips holding it in. Like I said, I'm sure someone will help out. ;)

If you '05 is like my '04 - then the bezel will pry off its held by clips only, use a putty knife so you won't damage the dash. It almost felt like it was breaking but it came off. Two bolt under it and your radio will pull out.
CD players - i heard early versions, maybe all of them i don't know, were fragile, so much so if they are shipped without the shipping bracket they were most likely damaged and the dealer was told to discard it. Seems to be a common issues for the 6disks, if you search I thought I read some post about it but I forgot what/where.

Replacement – I suggest getting it fixed they should ship it back with the bracket (ship mode), I’d be reluctant to get someone else’s problem, unless you can plug it in and test it on the spot. As to the part numbers, once you get your model number (ex. 4LT-18C868-CA is for the Cass/CD with Steering control, and rear DVD) you will have a better idea. For ’04 it may or may not have World Plugs, or sometime in’04 they change to a newer plug. . .i have spent hours and I’m still confused . . .

update

I got it off using a putty knife. I thought I'd break it for sure, but it survived. I'm going to get a replacement from ebay. The dealership that I bought the truck at is going to reimburse me for the cost. Thanks for the help...
