Have a 06 Explorer w/5R55S and 4WD and a friend is changing my ATF & Filter. He showed me the pan magnet and it has some debris on it. It looks more than I typically find. It appears to be roughly a 1/2 TSP of black stuff. My explorer has almost 180,000 on it and this is likely the 1st Trans ATF & filter change. Lately, the truck has started to shift late when upshifting. from 2-3 and possibly 3-4. Is it time to find a shop to install a rebuilt Transmission or can I get more miles from this one? TIA -

With 180K on a 4.0 I don't know if I would be putting a lot of money into it. Might be a good time to replace the Explorer before something goes but I know everyone isn't in the place to do that.

I wouldn't be alarmed if there are some fine particles attached to the magnet. Especially if the fluid hasn't been changed in a long time. All transmissions, differentials etc. experience wear and the magnets catch the fine particles resulting from this wear. If there are sizeable chunks of metal attached to the magnet, then this would be a cause for concern.
