I've searched around and haven't found anything like this yet. My 08 explorer has an issue when shifting form Park to anything else, it's like the cable is out of adjustment or something. You have to pull it into 3 and then back into D to get it to the right gear. Also, when she was going down the road she said it felt like it came out of gear and had to pull off the freeway and go back to P and then into D again.

I took the console apart today and the cable attachment to the shifter is good and tight and the cable under the car looks good. The only thing I saw was the rubber grommet was pulling out of the hole, so I sprayed it with WD-40 and reseated it in the hole.

That fixed the problem for a while today, but now my wife tells me the issue has come back. I won't be able to look at it until tomorrow to see if it's popped out again. Has anyone had this issue or know what the cause can be?

hmmmm. Its a known issue with the shifter being stuck or being difficult from coming out of park into another gear, but I havent heard of your issue before. Sorry I couldnt be of any help. You might want to look into replacing the shifter solenoid. May or may not be a fix. Its a cheap and easy fix (you can get the part for around $20 on amazon from Dorman). Or take it to a mechanic and have tjem diagnose the issue.
