I have a 1987 STX, 6 cyl, manual trans, 4x4 and it needs a trans, mine has a FM145 and I found a trans from a 89' which is a FM146, 2.9 4x4, $80 obo, this was an extra trans for a mud truck, never was used. Owner told me is will bolt right in, I just need a trans so I can sell this truck, Any of you have experiance with these transmissions?

Does your 87 also have a 2.9?

It has been a while since I have thought about the old Mitsibushi transmissions.

The main concern I would have is the length. If memory serves, the FM 145 is shorter than the FM 146. Otherwise, it is an easy swap. The problem with the shorter transmission is that the swap will usually involve shortening/lengthening driveshafts and making sure the transmission mount still fits in the right spot. If you were planning to keep the truck, then I would say to go for it. Since you are simply planning to sell, then I would be careful so you don't end up doing more than is necessary.
