Hello, Im a newbie on this board. I just bought a 96 X about 5 days ago with 190k for 3k. Im thinking that was a deal, until I started reading the horrifying threads about transmission problems. The check engine light came on after I had an synthetic oil change and I went to Auto zone to get it checked. The code said that the rear O2 sensor behind the catylic convertor was going bad and something about transmission hold was stuck?? But the X runs very smooth and strong, the tranny shifts perfect! Im beggining to wander if the last owner had a tranny rebuild?? How can I find out??? I bought it from a dealer and he has no clue. Should I worry about tranny problems in the near future?? I mainly bought this X to pull my motorcycle with, should I even do that??? Should I just go trade it for something else before I get to far in debt??? Please help??/

I think you will be fine. $3K sounds like a real good deal. With the money you saved put to maintenance the truck might need. Pulling bikes should be no problem.

My 96 EB has 180K on it and still runs pretty well. Generally only done normal maintenance, and the only things I've had to replace so far are the AC fan, and an idler pulley and serp belt!

Treat them right and they'll treat you right. I paid a hell of a lot more for mine at 150K than you did at 190!

well seems like u got a good deal.......

190k is alot for a 96 but o well

first off i would fix the O2 sensor and tahn if you have a trustable transmission shop in ur town i would take it to them and see if they can run a diagnostics(sp?) or ne type of test to see if its messed up, or to see if its been replaced......

if its been replaced the previous owner might have just not go the error cleared

PEACE

First off: Welcome to the best Explorer site on the net! You'll find more than enough info here.
Listen to XplorerKid, get the O2 sensor fixed and go from there. It sounds like you got a good deal on your X. In my area, 96 X's with 100,000-200,000 mi still go for anywhere between $5,000-$10,000. As for towing motorcycles, it won't be a problem. Many members, myself included, have towed cars on a regular basis.

with a 190k on a 96' its probably just a lot of highway miles so ur probably good to go
